A word of warning

for foreign property owners:

Earlier this summer we needed to have some work done on our roof in Zihua. Our manager found a contractor who was advised that 1. all workers were HIS employees, 2. all workers were to be insured by him and 3. all workers were to be properly secured while on the roof. On the first day, one of the workers fell off the roof because he wasn't secured, as specified. Fortunately, he survived, but with severe injuries. His employer had no money, so we paid 5,000.00 Pesos to haul him to the hospital in Morelia. Then, a couple of months later, we were sued, claiming he was our employee, rather than the contractor's! Many hearings later, we were instructed to pay him 100,000.00. On top of that, we had to pay 7,000.00 Pesos in attorney's fees.
So, if you need any work done on your house, be very careful and cover yourself with insurance, if it's even available.

Who was your attorney? Too often judges and attorneys collude with each other to squeeze a client. I would suspect a sizeable chunk of the "award" was actually split between them because your attorney fee seems awfully low.
