Advertising) Yup, agreed. In fact I went to the St Paul Pioneer Press Travel page. I loaded the last few months of stories and did a search for Mexico. This is all that was returned by the search:

Competition) Here I disagree. Yes I think that Ixtapa is in competition for the Pacific Coast U.S. Vacation Dollar. When we do have travel company adverts, Ixtapa is there, along with PV, Maz, and Cabo. Usually in a much smaller add than for the Puke & Rally trips to Cancun, Riviera Maya, and such.

IMO) One of the biggest road blocks to I/Z this year from our experience, has been Air Connections. I/Z has less and less non-stop, and one-stop flights to get us there. Last year, as well as this year, United Airlines has reduced their non-stop from IAH - ZIH (Houston to Zihuatanejo) to Saturdays Only!! We used to be able to count on this flight five days a week, and could tailor our Fall trip to suit our available time. This year, as last, we were only able to stay Saturday to Saturday.

Further, even During High Season many airlines no longer fly the ZIH route at all, but those very same airlines like Frontier are still flying to Cabo, PV, Maz etc etc etc.

What this effectively does is put Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo at a price and scheduling disadvantage. You have to really want to come to I/Z when the Airfare is 30% higher, and/or you can get a non-stop to other destinations for the same or even less.

As an example, I hit Kayak.com and I took the one stop from MSP (Minneapolis) though IAH (Houston) to ZIH from Saturday to Saturday December 9 - 16 flying United Airlines.

ZIH = $650

Cabo = $475

PV = $460

Just my observations.
