La Esencia de Zih

Rob- I am so dismayed to read your report this morning. I am in the process of becoming a condo owner and will soon be spending more and possibly significant time in Zihuatanejo. Am even likely to apply for permanent residency. But the mention of theft of the awnings is such a bummer. When I was there last month I was informed that the ropes to the new Paseo had been stolen. That was before they put up the most recent. I almost couldn't believe the story of stealing the ropes. And now the awnings?
Is there not enough pride, concern?
And yes- the Marinos.
There are surely many things I don't understand yet about how things function.
But it will soon become part of my immediate reality and I need to get up to speed because it WILL affect the quality of my life AND my investment.

There are a lot of poor and poorly educated people in the world, and some of them have found Zihuatanejo. Theft of the awnings doesn't bother me near as much as watching folks eat from the garbage or sleep on benches along the waterfront because they have nowhere to go. The world's an extremely hard and often punishing place for way too many people. And it's only getting worse as we continue to be too many.

I give thanks each day I wake up in this paradise, warts and all. I sure as hell don't miss Florida where persecuting poor brown-skinned folks seems to be one of their favorite pastimes.

I feel privileged to live here among family, friends and neighbors who make me feel more at home than anywhere else I've ever called home.

¡Viva Zihuatanejo!
