Zih Long Weekend

Monday September 16 is a holiday in Mexico to celebrate Día de la Independencia. We expect a good deal of tourists to be here, but we also expect there to be fireworks that terrorize animals and people alike. Maybe one of these years the people and the government will come to realize that loud explosions are no longer a joyful sound in the violent world we've come to live in. They have never been a joyful sound for the rest of the occupants of this planet for whom our species' arrogance has always been disastrous.

So for those of you who are here, get ready for a few extra noisy days with probably more than a few drunks and fireworks. Oh boy.

There is no warm and fuzzy way to say this, so call me a U.S. basher if you must:

Today is the day we remember and commemorate the murder of young cadets by gringo troops as they invaded Mexico City and marched toward the Castillo de Chapultepec in 1847 in a war based on lies (seems to be a recurring theme in U.S. history), so for those expat gringos living and visiting here you may wish to show a little extra humility today. Not one of the USA's brighter moments in its history.

There was a ceremony in honor of Los Niños Héroes at the Cancha Municipal this morning with troops stationed in Petatlán visiting to carry out the honors. We are quite thankful for their presence and their participation today at our zócalo. Here they are rehearsing for the ceremony that took place about an hour later,
