Haven't read the article but these should helP:
1. When you check out the car go over it with a fine tooth comb and take close up pictures to establish the condtion.
2. Make sure spare tire and jack/tools are in the truck.
3. Note condition of tires and wheel covers (damaged, missing)
4. Be especially alert for even a hint of rock chip.
5. Note and take pciture of alighment of doors, trunk and hood. Sometimes the care has been damageed and then fixed with shoddy repair.
6. Find a scratch (or dent or other damage) on every door and panel and hodd and trunk lid and makr it on the check out sheet.
By and large the companies are OK but I have had every one of the items listed above used against me over the years in U.S. and Mexico.
IMPORTANT: If the car company (or any other comany) makes charges on your card that you think unfair FILE A DISPUTE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Your card company will give you immediate credit and then it is up to the offender to prove his case. They must follow very, very strict procedures to substaniate their claim and the seldom do it right and your dispute will stand in your favor!

Few years ago we rented a car at the air port. When we returned it a week later, the rep put his hand under the engine area and had a little oil on his fingers. He said I would have to pay $150 to repair the problem. When I got back to our hotel, I notified AMEX. I was told when I got back home to send them a copy of the bill. Since the company would not verify the bill, my AMEX card was rembersed for the charge. We have not rented a car since because it is a lot cheaper doing a taxi- the only reason we rented then was to take a 3 day trip to Patazuaro(what a wonderful little city to visit).

Have been in Patz since June 14, leaving next week. Lovely, lovely place. We had planned to have a home here, health caused changein plans. It is cool and rainy during Jul-Sep, needing long sleeves and jacket although I have survived with shorts and short sleeved shirts.
Wondrgul people. Even the taxi and bus drivers are courteous. True culture not heavely influenced by outside factors.
Consider an early morning first class bus to Morelia then a "commuter" bus to Patz. Go to El Centro aruond Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica. Lot's of Hotels even on side streets--and lovely and inexpensive also. Taxi's 25 pesos anywhere local, a little more outlying ares---and they don't try to hijack clients and most will have change.
Want to see the countryside and the city? Just hop on one of many micros/combis and for 6 pesos you will get a round trip.
ABSOLUTELY SAFE AND SECURE HERE.
