Popular (reply)

Tent camping is very popular in Mexico. Maybe not as popular as it is in the USA and Canada, but popular nonetheless. There are many campgrounds in Mexico, and even more people camp along the vast shoreline. RV ownership isn't as popular. Probably for economic reasons. And for security/safety reasons. Most beaches at Semana Santa and year-end are full of tent campers. It's an almost universal sight in Mexico during those times.

Cocodrilo in the canal - photo (reply)

Thanks, but the blood on the canal wall really says all I need to know. I know you don't believe in infringing on other people's liberties, but when you see animal abuse please dial 066 to report it.

Well, Rob, I have looked really hard at all my photos and I do not see any blood on any wall. The people who were with me saw no blood anywhere even in the water around the cocodrilio and we also saw no animal abuse. Dirty water was splashed around. I was told there were bomberos there and I saw no need to call anyone. The young men trying to get the animal out of the canal seemed to know what they were doing. Maybe you needed to have been there.

Please tell "everyone" they need to get facts straight before they suggest I call someone. Where do you ever come up with all your ideas of what someone else believes?

Problem With Aduana part 2 (reply)

Danny, I believe what Scott was referring to is that if you have dual nationality and you are in Mexico then you will be treated legally as a Mexican, not as a Canadian, which makes driving the car of a foreign tourist illegal for you.
Does your friend speak Spanish? Is anyone helping him?

I recommend that your friend obtain the services of a lawyer. I highly recommend the services of Lic. Lucas Nava Brito here in Zihuatanejo for a matter like this.
Driving in Mexico Part 2

I’ve been itching to tell this story for the past 6 months because it’s worth telling, even if the protagonists have been somewhat reluctant. I apologize if my memory has jumbled some of the details, but the gist is this:

Back in mid-November/11, “Bill” and “Suzanne” were driving through Acapulco in their Canadian-plated vehicle, when they were pulled over by police, allegedly for speeding. (I don’t recall which police they were - transit, municipal, state or federal highway). It quickly became evident it was nothing more than a shakedown: a cash-grab by corrupt cops. Although he now feels he should not have done so, Bill surrendered his driver’s license to the male police officer, while the officer’s female partner stood nearby re-directing on-coming traffic, apparently as much in an effort to discourage any witnesses as for traffic safety. The officer showed Bill a printed chart listing various fines for speeding infractions - 6000 pesos in Bill’s case - which could be reduced to 3000 pesos if paid in cash, on-the-spot, to the officer.

Bill and Suzanne replied they didn’t have that much cash with them. Finally, they “settled” for the entire contents of Bill’s wallet, 1400 pesos. The officer returned Bill’s driver’s license, and the travellers were on their way.

End of story? Just a $110 introduction to Mexican police corruption? No, not for Bill and Suzanne, who, between them, carefully reconstructed exactly what had happened: date, time of day, precise location, weather conditions, physical description of the two police officers, details of the shakedown, etc.

Bill then got busy on his computer, drafting an e-mail that described in full and complete detail what had transpired. He expressed his disappointment that any motorist, whether Mexican national or foreign tourist, should have to put up with such blatant criminal activity from the very people entrusted to protect the public, and that this kind of police behavior could only discourage tourism. In tone, Bill’s e-mail was more an expression of disappointment, rather than an angry complaint.

Bill then went on the Internet and found the e-mail addresses for literally dozens of individuals who he thought should be interested in his story. This list of contacts included those responsible for tourism for the city of Acapulco and for the state of Guerrero, the municipal president/mayor of Acapulco, the Acapulco chief of police, the governor of Guerrero, President Calderon, as well as the Mexican Federal Minister of Tourism, their counterparts in various departments of the Canadian government, the Canadian High Commission in Mexico City, the Canadian consul in Acapulco, etc.

The apologies started rolling in. Based on the detailed information Bill had provided, an investigation had begun into the allegations made against the two police officers. Then, miraculously, and although Bill had never requested nor expected it, through the combined efforts of the Mexican federal, state and municipal governments, and officials in the Canadian government, Bill’s Canadian bank account was credited with the dollar equivalent of the 1400 pesos stolen from him.

Thank you for your help just to say I am from montreal Born in Quebec Anglophone, but thanks to my DAD my mom is Mexican so I can say that I have the best of two worlds LOL. But what I would like to say is that the S.A.T. in Acapulco is not willing to had over the car to the owner he went to Acapulco today 16th and they did not give him a straight answer (a Toyota Tacoma 2002) to what He needs to do. Something was said from the P.G.R. (M.P.federal) in Zihua for them to hold on to the car. So now He is on his way back.....
