MICH and Deep Kimchee

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Michoacan_net/messages

According to messages on this site and many other news reports Michoacan is in deep kimchee! Actually as I understand the really bad kimchee is in a rural village but cartel violence is widespread in the whole of Michoacan. Tourists and expats do not seem to be in any danger but certain areas occupied by cartels, primarily the Knights Templar, are in turmoil.

This is intended to be news and not a scare tactic. I have and will travel in GRO and MICH but will be aware of my surroundings. When I hire a taxi to go for a day tour and suggest so-and-so route I will listen to my driver when he says," Oh, Senor, that is not the area you want to go---may I suggest a different scenic drive". Yep, you bet, let's go with your suggestion!

Most folks have no idea that the little cove is called Playa La Almeja, though I believe a few folks also called it Playa Manzanillo (not to be confused with a couple of other nearby beaches with the same name). Anyway, here are a couple of photos from several years ago of this beach. Right now there isn't much beach there due to the high surf we've been having.

Sign Up Follow:Mexico , Mexico's Drug War , Mexico's Drug War , Video , Knights Templar Cartel , La Ruana Soldiers , La Ruana , Mexico Drug War , Mexico Self Defense Squads , Mexico Tropps Rescue Besieged Town , Michoacan , World News LA RUANA, Mexico -- Residents of a western Mexico area who endured months besieged by a drug cartel cheered the arrival of hundreds of Mexican soldiers Monday.

People in La Ruana in Michoacan state lined the main road to greet more than a dozen troop transports and heavily armed Humvees with applause and shouts of joy.

The town's supplies had been blocked after the Knights Templars cartel declared war on the hamlet. The cartel dominates much of the state, demanding extortion payments from businessmen and storeowners, and even low-wage workers.

In February, the town formed self-defense squads to kick the cartel out, drawing the wrath of the gang. Convoys of cartel gunmen attacked the town, which was forced to throw up stone barricades and build guard posts.

Supplies like gasoline, milk and cooking gas began to run low as cartel gunmen threatened to burn any trucks bringing in goods.

On Monday, hundreds of soldiers moved in, erecting checkpoints on the highway leading into La Ruana and setting up an operating base in the town.

"This war has been won!" Hipolito Mora, leader of the self-defense movement, told hundreds of cheering townspeople gathered along the main road, including dozens of self-defense patrol members wearing white T-shirts and carrying shotguns.

Mora said the town had agreed to stop community patrols and let the army take over security in La Ruana. But he said the community would keep its weapons and would start patrols again if the army left.

The idea that troops might come in and seize a town's weapons, or stay only a few weeks, worried people throughout the crime-ridden area. So in town after town along the main highway through Michoacan's hot lowlands known as the Tierra Caliente, self-defense squads welcomed the army's arrival, but vowed to keep their guns.

How do they do it...aka...Why I can't go home-

Today at the public mercado I paid 45 pesos for this, about $3.65 USD. In the San Francisco area this would be $11.00 by my calculations IF bought in one of those bulk foods markets. In the regular markets (Nugget/Safeway etc) this would be $15+ easily. But the best part is they have real flavors and taste like they should...what a concept.

Owen Lee

to all of Owen's good friends, neighbors and employees,
it is with great distress i share this news with you...
two nights ago Owen had a stroke, a brain clot.
it was quite severe and his right side is paralized and cannot communicate well as it affected his tongue.
he is in Clinica Maciel # 10 in Zihuatanejo with his loving partner Charo and many friends at his side.
He needs rehabilitation and the recovery will take much time.
we are working on taking shifts so someone stays with Owen at all times, so if you are near and can take an hour or two with our dear friend, it will be much appreciated.
We are starting a schedule for that, so it will be available there for sign ups.
I will make updates whenever possible, and feel free to PM me for any other info.
I am Owen's property assistant on Las Gatas and saw him already today.
he looks much better, has an IV to rehydrate and his grip is strong, I wish we can figure out a way he can communicate with us with more ease.
In advance we thank you for your help!
Owen, Charo, Elvira, Dolores, Lalo, Ramiro and many others.

Just rec'd an email from Suncountry stating they were flying Thur., Fri. and Sun. next winter. Apparently they have packages that are on sail now. Don't have the time to check them out, however.

Fly fishing?

My hubby says yes, I haven't read a thing about it. He swears he saw people fly fishing during our last trip. I think he ate the worm and is confusing it with our trip to Cabo. Is there fly fishing in Zihua?

Patzcuaro to Zihuatanejo

I searched the archives (yes, Rob, I searched the archives!!) and found a lot of good information about the Morelia area. Thanks to those who contributed over time. Very helpful.

I want to clarify one thing. I assume that there is no way to get a bus directly from Patzcuaro to Zihuatanejo. From what I read, you can go from Morelia or Uruapan but not Patzcuaro. Am I correct?

It's not a big deal just makes a difference in planning the last day or so of the trip.

A Few of Z Colors

I've been kind of busy and haven't been posting photos as often as I'd like so I thought I'd make an effort today. Hopefully these won't be criticized (ahem!) for being too colorful or the wrong colors or that I'm covering up "the truth" or whatever. They're just photos, and if you have complaints please post them in another thread.

Evening walks on the pier are one of our favorite things to do when we can. There is always beauty to discover and enjoy.

All over the region trees are blooming bright colors. This is one that caught my attention the other day in Ixtapa.

Our local church dedicated to Tonantzín aka Guadalupe has a beauty all of its own. Maybe it is an acquired taste, but I admire it for what it is. And I hope folks remember to give thanks to my mother-in-law for her efforts to establish this church and bring its handcarved altar here by boat back when our roads were almost impassable.
