Hand carved/painted tables- search hit paydirt BIGTIME! (reply)

During our 1st trip to Zihua in 2001, we passed a little furniture store in downtown Z. They had the most beautiful carved and painted dining table and six chairs. We had it shipped (with a lot off craziness) to our home near Boston. At the time, $1000. U.S. for the set and about the same for shipping. But honestly, IF you could find a set like this in New England, you'd spend $5,000. easy. We LOVE our "taste" of Zihua in MA

Protection Against Cracking & Splitting (reply)

I wish I had slathered on Verathane after buying a table for 4.

Kiln dried pine won't dry out and split as easily as air dried, but how do you tell the difference if kiln dried pine furniture can be had at all?

Hand carved/painted tables- search hit paydirt BIGTIME! (reply)

We went to Juanajo looking for a dining table and chairs (not carved and painted) a few years ago. Most workshops were closed - supposedly because the workers were up North working in the fields - but one had exactly what we were looking for. We told the owner that we'd like to buy the set and asked if he could arrange for transportation to Zihua. The answer was "NO". Business must be good in Juanajo. We finally found what we needed in Zihua. We did enjoy our visit to Patzcuaro and Morelia, though.

We found that village on a side trip from Morelia after we went to see the butterflies. Unfortunately, none of the ones we saw would work. Although I was drawn to the bright colors, I think they would be a little tiresome after a while. I was hoping to find something exactly like you showed in your first picture, that had more "restrained" colors.
FWIW there is a line of shops on the road to the lake in Patzçuaro. They look very "rustic" on the outside but many of them have similar tables.

Hand carved/painted tables- search hit paydirt BIGTIME!

A month ago I posted a request for where to find carved-hand painted tables and posted a pix of my neighbors table as an example....maybe you remember. Of the 3-4 replys it was "I WANT ONE TOO" but no help in the search. WELL...I joined a Michoacán message board and posted the same question....BINGO! I had a number of replies all stating these tables came from a little village 15 minutes to the east of Patzcuaro called Cuanajo. The whole village is about wood furniture. Roughly, four seaters are about 6-7 hundred bucks and 6 seaters are about 8-ish $. This place is SO fun!!

Tomorrow we go back after robbing the bank...I think we are going to go for the last one.

After shopping all day, my guess is that we will rob a bank and end up buying the last table photo tomorrow.
