I am sure some places are still open and I too hope that Baja Norte survives the current situation; it is too close and too special to be written off forever. Having said that, the events (and you know what I mean) of the past couple years have put it off limits for the time being for a lot of folks,including the ones I visit in San Diego.

A bit further south, I know several very successful shrimp, clam and abalone farms. They are responsible farmers/fishermen and it provides a glimmer of hope.

The Baja Norte area is controlled by one Cartel, it's been relatively mellow. I am not looking to argue safety, but I still visit the area often and have not heard of any gringos getting whacked. TJ is down right calm, Ave. Revolucion got a face lift and the Marines can no longer party there.

Valle de Guadalupe and Califa are Baja's wine country, a short drive form Ensenada. It's a ton of fun and good food. I won't write the area off so easily.

For many years in Z area, lobs came in near-exclusively from Puerto Nuevo, some ‘fresh/live’, with the majority being frozen. I remember years back, when the ‘bridge’ over the back channel was frickin 2x12s on posts (!), where we were sadly notified over at Lety’s (?) after The Hike that there “are no lobsters since the flight from TJ (Puerto Nuevo) didn't come in today".....!

I can’t recommend any local sources, as we personally “do lobster” primarily at home, and of a grilled style in devout memorable respect for the MOUNTAINS of lobs that were once served-up on BIG platters in Puerto Nuevo…… and CHEAP 'back then', TOO……. with always Bien Fria caguamas! Though I would guestimate that many of the finer hotel and marina restaurants in Ixtapa would be a fairly reliable bet, and perhaps of an even more 'elegant' setting, if that is your goal. Simply give them a confirmation call upon your area arrival, or any of the other good local Z recos posted above.

And we shagged a few Big Boys last year in The Caymans which while indeed tasty, are nothing like Pacific lobsters; which are nothing like Maine lobsters. ALL Good though….. with that drawn butter just dripping uncontrollably down your chest!
