A Real Chiapas Story (reply)

Could you be thinking of El Cañón del Sumidero? It's not a lake but a river valled Río Grijalva that runs all the way to Villahermosa, Tabasco. A few years ago after some heavy storms during rainy season a section of mountain fell, similar to what happened at a Canadian lake resort last week, and the resulting tsunami completely wiped out the village of Juan del Grijalva in Chiapas. The river dammed itself up and a major construction job had to be carried out to repair it without wiping out any more towns downriver. I never saw it mentioned in the US media, though it was THE news here for several tense weeks while the water backed up and the government busted its hump to prevent further disaster.

I'm thinking of a solo jaunt to Chiapas. Thanks for sharing those great pix. I also want to see a spectacular lake area with a spot that looks very much like a Scandanavian fjord. (forgot the name).
