Shell will open its first gas station in Mexico

by Johnny Briefcase @, Thursday, September 07, 2017, 12:35 (99 days ago)

The first station will open in the State of Mexico and the company estimates it will open up to 2000 more stations over the next 10 years. Is this a good thing for Mexico or not ? ....JB

Well, the model says that competition is a good thing......unless you're in Canada, where gas prices between the 8 or 10 retailers are always identical.....to the tenth of a cent....within the same locality. For example, gas prices at every station here in our town in southern British Columbia were $1.179 Canadian per liter before Hurricane Harvey. (Yes, that's right - about $3.57 US$/$4.46 C for a US gallon, and an outrageous $5.36 C for the larger Imperial gallon.)
After Harvey, the price jumped to $1.239 overnight.....again, at every station, within 10 minutes of each other.
Our government insists they can't prove price fixing and collusion between the major gasoline companies, when the proof has been staring them right in the face for decades. It's the price, stupid!

And to add insult to injury Canada has more refineries per capita then the US but our gas sells for much less just across the border. My guess is that Shell and Pemex will do the same thing. We will see what Gas Buddy reports.

Isn't that the definition of dumping? I thought dumping was illegal?

Memo to Curbarn, who wrote: "I always find it funny that people have cast big oil in the same light as big government, whose only purpose is to rip us off.........".
You're confused. "Big oil" and "big government" aren't separate entities.

I do jump in and out of resource stocks to help mitigate these costs. It is business and who is to say if they had the chance to make an excess wage/bonus because of certain demand of your skills you wouldn't do it?
I have no doubt that there will be collusion in Mexico even if that means Pemex has to take a bit of a haircut.

We are 102 in Calgary today. Why do prices increase on gasoline that is already in storage in Canada.
It was refined a long time ago.
Greed is the only reason.

I always find it funny that people have cast big oil in the same light as big government, whose only purpose is to rip us off. If it were so we should be able to see a line graph of the evil big oil companies stock prices, that would start low on the left and high on the right. FYI Exxon the biggest and worst has been dead money since 2007. So where exactly is this huge pile of money going?

. In BC about 35 cents. A litre is tax.
But station owners make 3c a litre . Appears to some profit for the corporations.
Perhaps Exxon is a poor example.
Check out Shell Canada and Shell North America

ok well, Shell Canada is a private company absorbed by RDS in 2006 or 7, I think. In the last ten years, Royal Dutch is also dead in the water. We pay higher prices in the Pacific North West because so much product comes from a refinery with very tight supply. It likely will not get better as more and more people move to the west coast of both countries and there is no one that wants a new refinery. BUYING AN ELECTRIC CAR may be the only way to avoid this.

Or how about driving less? I drive an extremely economical vehicle maybe once a week. I work out of my home and I walk most everywhere I need to go. Just sayin'... There's no reason to continue living a lifestyle that is so unsustainable and so harmful for the planet.

Agreed but N. Amercian cities are built on the basis of driving a car and no one wants to pay taxes so that public transit can be beefed up.(which is where some of the taxes we complain about are supposed to go) Ottawa has many a km of bicycle paths and walking paths very progressive yet there has been a battle for many a year about the rapid transit system from the outskirts to the centre however it is coming around.

And when the prices drop......say I am a shell franchisee, my in ground tanks a near empty, the tanker shows up and tops the tanks off and let's say for discussion purposes I pay $.60 a litre/gallon, taxes $.40 a litre/gallon and I am selling at $1.07 giving me a $.07 profit to pay utilities, staff etc., a week later retail Gas prices drop to $1.02 a litre/gallon, my $.07 profit has now dropped to $.02 a liter....I am now hoping the retail price doesn't drop anymore or I have a cash flow problem.........just saying.
