Hi Everyone -

I'd like to introduce you to our new endeavor - Zihro Plastic is here:

MISSION:
To educate and empower the local community by introducing eco-friendly alternatives to plastics in our daily lives and working together to clean up beaches and seabeds.

PROJECTS:

1. Eliminate the Use of Straws in restaurants and homes through intensive campaigns and sales of re-usable straws.
2. Eliminate single-use plastic bags by making and selling re-usable shopping bags.
3. Clean up the beaches and sea beds by organizing on-going community volunteer events.

We hope to become self-sustaining through the sale of sea-glass bracelets, locally made with reclaimed materials, and the sale of re-usable shopping bags in various locations around town. We will also need to rely on donations, sponsorships and volunteerism in our community.

WHO WE ARE:
An international team of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo residents who care deeply about our town and the environment as a whole. We each bring our own unique experience and expertise and are volunteering our time and resources to the project.

Your mission sounds good, BUT would be more comfortable if you had any locals involved with you and if the prices on your products were not in USD, isn't the idea to get Mexicans to use reusable shopping bags? . Are you a registered non Profit in Mexico?

I agree - why not in pesos?? It IS Mexico after all. Not everyone living down here are from the US. There are even - GASP - Canadians down here that don't have US dollars. What a surprise huh???

Have you thought about a cans over glass campaign ?
Cans can be recycled in Mexico but not glass.

I'm not sure where you're getting your info. Come to Eco Tianguis on Saturdays and bring all your cans, glass, plastics, cardboard, etc. to be recycled.

Also, glass is not harmful to sea creatures and the environment as plastics are, and glass degrades back into sand, plastic doesn't degrade much if at all. Please check out our website for more info on how plastics harm the environment: www.zihroplastic.org

Thank you Monkey Jenn for what you are doing for Zihua Ixtapa...I will happily donate in whatever form of money I can.
Thanks for working on the education and awareness of this great cause. Cant' wait to see you in Zihua in November.

Also I would like to point out for those interested..drinking out of glass is healthier than drinking out of (most?all?) cans. I haven't bought canned beer in over 30 years. I can't even stand the taste of a beer in a can (yuck..especially the last few sligs!!)

Recyling Center takes glass and everything

by debio @, Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 14:38 (34 days ago) @ Mexalberta

The recycling center (info below) takes glass, bottles, cardboard, paper, metal, plastic..as of last spring they were still as helpful and eager to take everything...I posted this 3 years ago..(I think the manager has changed though)

I finally got the address to this great place...Aguacate 7, Centro, 40890. They are so organised and helpful. They take plastic, glass, cardboard, paper and metal cans...I'm not sure if I'm missing anything. I believe they open at 8 am and I know the manager said they are open 7 days a week. (maybe they close at 6 pm). The manager's name is Juan Carlos and his phone number is 755 558 9326..and the office is 554 2082 and ask for the area de reciclaje.

Great Ideas and a good start. There was a clean up in March on La Ropa and I would suggest that snorkelers can produce as much ocean trash as divers in the shallow zones that much of the trash accumulates. I would love to see some of the oystermen being paid to participate as most of them must work most days to get by and don't have time to donate. If funds could be found to pay the oystermen then they might get more of a sense of pride in cleaning the junk they swim through daily.

Please be happy always

Good ideas, but trouble with the donation page. I couldn't enter all info, alas, couldn't donate. xcellent idea. I hate straws! And water bottles. Use criticism only to better your efforts.

Thanks to your notice- I have found a different donation plug in to use. Sorry to say to the Canadians who are offended - it's still in US $...but it's free for us to use the donation plug-in. I think it's a lot better. Care to give it a try? Thank you!!!!

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes, support and participation - we had a great event! We even made front page news in the ABC Zihuatanejo paper on Monday and in El Diario de Zihuatanejo - (some misquoted and misinformation...but any press is good press, right?)

Still sorting through the 14 or so bags of trash collected to get our final tallies (we didn't finish Sunday and all work during the week...soon!). Watch our site and Facebook for updates. We hope this momentum with donations and bags/t-shirt sales will allow us to plan another event soon. We are so grateful for the community support from so many local people, organizations and businesses!

Pictures from our event are up on Facebook and this great video made by our friend/local videographer: Zihro Plastic's First Event

A limited supply of our small Shopping Bags and T-Shirts are still available--please email me if you are interested [t-shirts 100 pesos, med bags 60 pesos, small bags, 50 pesos]

Large bags are sold out - We are hoping to get more made soon as we have the funds.

We are also hoping to begin work on making our seaglass bracelets, but are in need of a drill, or enough donations to purchase one...anyone??
