Processing small dog through Customs-Mexico City Airport

by Sunlight Dancer, Tuesday, September 26, 2017, 18:59 (80 days ago)

Has anyone traveled recently from the US through Mexico City Airport with a small dog? I have contacted the airline for permission to fly with her under the seat, provided the dog's weight and dimensions of the dog carrier, etc. I am aware of the certificates from the vet I need to present.

What I don't know is the Customs process in the Mexico City Airport between the time we land in MEX and the connecting flight from MEX to Zihua. I have two hours between flights.

Can any of you kind people walk me through what to expect with my little dog at Customs in Mexico City Airport? Many thanks!

Hola
We have come to Zihua with our dog for the last 8 years. We have only gone through Mexico City once. A little more of a hassle than going direct to Zihua. After going through the regular customs, we were directed to a small room where all of the dogs documents were photocopied several times. With all the relevant documents it took us about a half an hour to proceed. The good news is that once you get to Zihua on your transfer flight, you are home free. Right off the plane to the baggage carousel, pick up your stuff and straight out. No customs.
PS The relevant documents were an International Travel Certificate from your vet stating that all of the mutts vaccinations were up to date and one from the vet that he was fit to travel. Also Mexico requires that your dog's rabies vaccines are done yearly, not every three years as is required in Canada.
On my unedited version I spelled "rabies" as "rabbis" just to stir up the usual sideways comments from the bozos on this site, but after a couple more tokes I thought better of it. Maybe I should have left it as it was.

One other thing your health certificate should state that your dog has been treated for indo and ecto parasites. inner and external. Go through immigration rapido straight to luggage carousal pick up your luggage quickly go to customs window for pets and try to be as quick as possible so you can put your luggage back on the carousal with all the others who have connecting flights My luggage was pilfered once while I took to long. once this is done you will have to get to the other part of airport (sometimes this happens) where you will wait until your flight has a gate # on the terminal screens through-out the airport.

One thing... customs in Mexico city made us take papers towels etc out of our dogs carrier! Told her we never had to do that before when she said it was entry, our usual entry Zihua?!?! Poor old dog had to go in cargo, hard plastic slippery carrier! Still pissed about it & he was sooo stressed when we saw him!!:wtf: :omg: :vivamexico:
