Pet Passports

by Karen, Friday, September 29, 2017, 12:26 (21 days ago)

I got an interesting phone call today (from Hector at the Zihuatanejo customs office). He said they are creating a pet passport system to simplify bringing our pets into Mexico. WOW! He wanted my email to send me information on getting this "Pet Passport", which would save time at the airport... What a fantastic idea! Did anyone else get a call?

Hola
Sounds like a scam to me. How much money did he ask for in advance?

No scam. I have some pals that have come in to Mexico recently with their dog. There was a whole new procedure. And the dog got a passport!

Hola
OK, but how much did it cost them?

Not a scam... I received the email today and there is a form you fill out and submit with all the necessary documents. It is for dogs that frequently visit Zihuatanejo, and the 'passport' is good for 6 months without additional health certs, etc. There is no fee to submit all the documents, and then they issue you this 'passport' for your dog to streamline entey into the country. It appears this is a pilot program, so I am very excited!

Now that's a good question. I doubt it. But, maybe. I'll ask.

Irrespective, it would still save time at the airport in Zihua.

I guess my point is you will probable have to get a health certificate as well. The airlines are slow to change unless of course there's a fee they can charge you :). I do have interest in finding more about it . Its frustrating to get 4 health certificates a year . What's worse is the vets always want to give them a shot even though they are up to date .

Hello Karen , I travel back and forth from Z every year with my two small dogs. I would be interested in any information you find on this . I do know the requirements changed a little this year . However this is the first to me... if it makes it easier I would love to know more.
Thanks

Hi, Karen, we are arriving with our 2 dogs from Canada for 2 months, Dec/jan. We would like to know more about this program if possible. We always have to go to agriculture with our documents and then sit while more documents are laboriously typed and stamped. Meanwhile, the dogs are desperate after being crated for 7+ hours. This will be our first arrival with pets at zihuatenejo .

Hola
If you are flying direct to Zihua you should have no problem. They have never given us any grief for the seven years we have flown direct there as long as you have the proper documents. If you give them this "dog passport", I think that it will make it more difficult. They will not have a clue what it is, just as I do not know. The "passport" will just open a big can of worms.

Hi, and thanks, I'm inclined to agree. We are flying direct from Canada, and have been flying with our dogs for many years. Trying hard to improve my Spanish...last time we ended up with our dogs names instead of ours on the form....

After reading the email from the Zihuatanejo customs office (at the airport), they are trying this pilot program to streamline the process for those of us that frequently bring our pets to Zihuatanejo. They always make copies of the health cert and rabies vaccine paperwork, so it looks like they will create a 'frequent pet traveler' passport which will allow easy access for the pet thru the Zihuatanejo customs. I have traveled back and forth with a dog for a long time now to Zihuatanejo, and although it's not a difficult process, it can be very time consuming while they get the paperwork ready. I was actually surprised because Héctor, from the customs office, called me, here at my US home phone, and offered me information about the program, following it up with an official e ail and information. I look forward to this pilot program, and appreciate Zihuatanejo customs trying to make this easier.

Like Victorio my first reading of your post was a big red scam flag. Hope it is true and helpful, but my question is how did Hector have your home phone number? This is all so un-Mexico I am curious.:-D

When you bring a pet to Zihua there is a ton of paperwork you have to submit and they actually give you an official document showing that the animal has permission to be in the country. It's all very official with addresses and phone numbers and is entered in their computers. Don't be so suspicious!

Pet Passports for driving through border crossings too?

by debio @, Sunday, October 01, 2017, 20:35 (19 days ago) @ Karen

I wonder if they are applicable for the border crossings. We have never been asked for our dogs health certs or proof of rabies in 8 years ..crossing in at Nogales and Nuevo Laredo. Usually they ask if they are 'bravo' and that's about it..
Has the experience changed recently? anyone know?

We have never been asked for our pet paperwork at Nogales, either. Our friends have not, either.

However, we have given up entering at Lukeville/Sonoyta because they ALWAYS want it, go through the fridge, freezer, and finally, in the end, give you a brochure entitled, "It's not the law, but it's for the good of Mexico." That explains why they just attempted to take everything from our fridge and freezer.

Even though that entry saves us a couple of hundred miles, it's just not worth the hassle!

We entered at the Solidarity Bridge (Colombia) yesterday October 2 and although our dog was frantically barking at the Aduana woman she asked cursory questions about one package and never ever mentioned the dog. They now have a new, to us anyway, Aduana inspection area and with room for 10 or more vehicles and ourselves and one other truck were the only ones there. 2 minutes at most.

Cats Too?

by Ernie Gorrie ⌂ @, Saturday, September 30, 2017, 18:53 (20 days ago) @ Karen

The discussion I have seen here so far has been about dogs. Does this apply for cats too?

I will be bringing my cat back for some "summer in winter" time in November. Then we will be back in April. If this applies to cats too, I want to be sure to bring whatever paperwork I need to bring in November to make April easier.

Cats Too?

The email references pets, so I believe the program would apply to any pet that frequently visits Zihuatanejo via the airport.

Ernie,

I brought my cat down to Zihuatanejo on the plane with me. I just needed to get an international certificate for my cat from the Vet and then when I arrived everything went pretty smoothly. Just had to wait an additional 15 minutes while the customs people reviewed my paperwork and filled out their own.

Yes, I have found that waiting for my luggage sometimes takes longer than the cat paperwork.

I would like fir her to have a passport though. But you know how you aren't allowed to smile for a passport photo?

I'm not certain that either of us could help smiling if she had to get a passport photo. ;-)

I would like to learn more about this for my early November trip.

Thanks

Pet Passports

Karen, would you please keep us updated on this? We've never had any trouble bringing our dog, the gentlemen have always been very nice. In February, they gave us some paperwork with a new requirement of topical flea & tick meds administered by the vet. We'd be interested in a pet passport to ease everyone's paperwork.

Thanks!
