planning a 3 day trio to Uruapan in a week and would like to hear from anyone who has been there in the last few years on things to do and things to avoid. I will be driving from Zihua.

The national park in the center of town is a must.
If you have any interest at all in stringed instruments, or just fine craftsmanship, go to Paracho.
The volcano Paracutin is fabulous. We have walked out to the church twice. It's really fun if you do the homework first about how it started and what happened.
It's a neat city.
We have always stayed at Pie de la Sierra on the hill toward Paracho and Paracutin. Nice place, dog friendly, and great views.

High on our list -- contact a guide in a small surrounding town to take you horseback to climb Paricutin. Bring your camera. Well worth it.

I really enjoyed the waterfalls at Tzararacua. It's a fair hike to the bottom, but you can rent a horse.

Don't mention riding a horse to my wife. We rode them at the butterfly reserve and they did not adjust her stirrups- she was rubbed raw in some areas after we got back to the starting point. This was her first and last time on a horse.
