Over the last couple of years, whenever I passed an optician's place, I'd stop in and ask if they'd be interested in donating old glasses for poor people in Mexico. Every time the answer was NO, since they already had a destination for their used ones. Then, about a week ago, I had an idea. I wrote a letter to the editor of the Missoulian newspaper explaining what I wanted to do. Over the next couple of days I got a dozen e-mails from folks in the area, willing to donate some glasses. All but one had anywhere from 3 to 6 pairs. But a member of the Missoula Elks Club blew me away; he had 1000 pairs of glasses to give away! I didn't count them, but I weighed them, so there would not be any problems with the airlines: 60 pounds! I neglected to ask how long it took to collect that many, but I'll keep in touch for next year. If others try the same thing, we might be able to collect enough glasses for all the people with vision problems in Zihua.

Rob: The fellow from the Elks Club wants some pictures of people with their new glasses. Could you e-mail me some if you have any, so I can pass them on?

Nice job! Thank you Sidney! And especially thanks to your Elks Lodge friend!

Here are some photos. Just send your friend the URL for this webpage from the address bar or copy and paste the photos into your e-mail. I've got lots more photos if you need them.

Probably a silly question Rob, but are the glasses matched with the wearers eye issues to ensure they are not creating a bigger vision problem?

Normally, the Elks people ship their collected glasses to a place that determines what the correction of each lens is. They then attach a label with that information, before the glasses are shipped to where they are distributed. It would be good to know if just trying glasses on until things look better could possibly cause other problems.

Well it would be good to know if in this case that the glasses dropped with Rob and Lupita are identified as to the strength and if the recipients are aware of what they actually need.

No idea about glasses which have been dropped off previously, but the ones we're bringing down in April will not have been checked. Hopefully, there's someone in Zihua who can volunteer to do that.

My wife prefers to receive glasses that have the gradation marked on them. There is no one here who can do that for free that we are aware of, and my wife does not have any more time to spend on this than what she already does.

For generic readers, unless it's worn off, the strength is usually marked on the inside frame.

My wife does not pretend to be an optometrist or a medical professional. She is trying to help folks with a need, and she is trying to do the best she can with what she has available. If you have a helpful suggestion to improve the process please feel free to offer it to her.

I wish I knew of a way to ensure the recipients were receiving the glasses they need to help with their vision issues but I do not, just hoping their issues are not heightened due to using glasses not proper for their vision problems.

They sell the "readers" in every discount, pharmacy, and wholesale place in the USA without any professional guidance.I don't see a bigger problem here.

I guess if the glasses being donated are "readers" then all is good, prescriptions glasses are another story

Yes they are, yet nevertheless my wife is practically working miracles with all the glasses being donated to try to help people who need help so they can see better.

Rob, here's a little info I pulled off the I-net that should relieve any worries you & Lupita might have over the amazing work she is doing for the sight-impaired in Zih. If she's not already doing the following...I would think that if Lupita put together a 30-second "elevator speech" warning her recipients about the symptoms below, she would be covering her bases quite easily.

Wearing the wrong prescription of glasses does not do any damage to the eyes. Glasses are just refractive aids which will not affect the eyes in adults. In children, wearing the wrong prescription can cause Refractive Amblyopia.

Wearing the wrong prescription is very unlikely to cause any temporary or permanent damage to the eyes. It can, however, cause symptoms which are called asthenopia and include blurry vision, headache, nausea, eye pain, brow ache and others.

For someone with a sight problem, anything would make a world of difference! I would guess that if those symptoms appeared they would be smart enough to stop wearing them! (Never look a gift horse in the mouth!!)
Thank You Lupita and Rob and all the donors for doing this!

Label says " Ready to wear glasses sold without prescription are designed for occasional use by persons 40+ who suffer from presbyopia. These glasses are not designed to replace corrective lenses sold by prescription. The use of ready to wear reading glasses does not replace regular eye examinations to assess the health of your eyes and determine your needs with respect to your vision".

And this is what I was getting at initially.
