MegaCable cut off everything but two channels Monday night - you now need a box. If you currently have MegaCable and do NOT have a box, you can pick one up at their office in Centro, but make sure you bring ID. And a sandwich/torta. There's long lines.

I only have one TV with a box. My other TVs are still receiving all their channels. You may have a different problem if you aren’t receiving a signal without a box.

We have only one TV and have had Megacable for 4 years. When we went to Mega's office, we were told we absolutely had to have the box (and had to have your INE to get the box) if you want to see anything besides channel 2 and 79. They also asked us what colonia we're in, so it's possible they're doing it in waves in different parts of the city. We're in La Noria and folks in Almacen have also had the same problem. Watch out! Could be coming your way! Happy viewing.

I used to be a cable TV tech in another life. I'm pretty sure they don't have enough boxes for all their subscribers so requiring everyone to have one would be a nightmare for them, and for basic service it isn't supposed to be required. That's how places like hotels can offer it without having to have a box with a separate remote control in every room. One signal is emitted for the entire city. It doesn't depend on where you live. So if your TV is missing sections of channels try reprogramming or rescanning or else get a tech to check it. We have 4 TVs in our home and only one uses a box. I refuse to pay 90 pesos or whatever they want to charge per additional box per month.

The reason they ask what colonia you're in is because not all neighborhoods have cable TV installed. For the oldest neighborhood in Ixtapa where we have a house their service isn't available because they've still not installed it. Our tenants have always purchased a satellite TV service, as most of Ixtapa has. Megacable is really missing out on augmenting their customer base of folks who would pay for premium services year round.

FYI we call your "INE" your credencial. ;-)

Couldn't re-scan and no one will come out - they don't answer their phones. Well, we're retired, so I guess this is a good project for my cute husband - find out if we really need the box he spent a few hours yesterday getting! Thanks for letting me know!

While it's possible they could be installing filters to scramble signals at strategic locations instead of each individual subscriber's installation, it just seems counterproductive because if I were a hotel or inn I sure as hell wouldn't pay for all their extra boxes and I wouldn't want all those additional remote controls. Just something else to get stolen or broken and have to pay for. So it makes very little sense to require everyone have a box. Yes, the picture quality is digitalized and better with a box and you get a lot more channels, but if you have more than one TV then the addressable boxes are an additional cost that most folks here won't pay.

Without the box, did your cable run directly into the back of your TV or did you have it connected to something else first like a splitter or a DVD player? If it went to something else first then try connecting the cable directly to the TV and running the autoprogram feature of your TV. It should find all the channels from 2 to 95 or 96 (I forget how many there are). Remember to put it back on channel 2 or 3 (whichever you have it set to) to connect your new cable TV box back to your TV when you're done.

We only have one TV, so multiple boxes isn't an issue with us. Our cable went from the wall directly into the back of the TV, and we had what Timmac was describing. Snow on all but two channels and running the autoprogramming didn't work. This would be a nightmare for hotels. It's enough of a scramble for residential service. The Megacable office was packed with people, some leaving with boxes and a blank look on their faces - hopefully someone will help them install the box - no instructions come with it. From various cousins and neighbors - if you had cable installed new in the last month or so it was installed with a box. If you already had cable service (like us), no notice of a change coming. Nobody gave you a box when you were in the office paying your bill the week before. Nothing - just one day snow and nobody answering the phones to get any kind of technician out. Still love living here. (and thanks for the tip about calling the INE credential.)

For the past two days we've had 80channels down snow at Catalina. We do get channel 2. I have not checked channel 79. As far as I know all of the rooms have small megacable boxes that are not connected. I tried the box briefly the other night and got a bunch of music channels, but little else. On the chance that it might be aa addressable box I hooked it up this am and will see if anything has happened. The folks at Catalina, while they know there is a change, do not otherwise have any idea what is going on.

Maybe they really are doing this the hard way and installing scrambling filters at strategic locations. If I lose my signal I will cancel my account. I do not want any more boxes, and most of what I watch comes via internet nowadays. There are affordable alternatives that offer multi-TV usage in your home without charging extra. The Megacable folks are way behind the times and their customer service not so efficient.

FWIW—Initialy coax directly in to antenna port on tv. Would tune with tv tuner and get channels up to 95 or so, with some of them scrambled. When I connected the box and tune to channel 3 I got a ton of music channels I. The 600s. Then channels at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500, all of which were the same.. it’s really not that big a deal to be without TV here, but the ABC, NBC and CBS feeds are our local Seattle stations, so while we clean off from the beach we could keep up on news at home. I could actually probably stream with various services if the connection was faster here.

It appears that the box is addressable and took a while to be validated. Working well. For those interested ABC, NBC and CBS, 178, 179, 180. Passed Fox and CNN on the way up..

MegaCable change...WARNING! SOME BOXES DON'T WORK

by marshasg1, Saturday, March 03, 2018, 16:33 (201 days ago) @ Tere

after a 3 hour wait to get boxes ( 3 because I administer some condos) one of the boxes did not work! The person who helped me install it said it was clearly "used."

Now, I'll need to wait again to see the person who will replace the box.

Check your box to see that it does not look used! Avoid this problem if possible!
