Who is getting paid?

We are wondering if the packers at Mega and Merza are now getting paid a salary of some kind or are still relying on all our collective tips?

The same would be for the boat "helpers" at Playa Linda. Yesterday all the"helpers" and the captains of the boats were asking for tips and saying that it was their salary. We don't mind tipping but never had the captains ask before.

The baggers at the stores work for tips. Be sure to tip them and smile.

As much as I hate to do it, yesterday at Soriana a couple had obviously just arrived and purchased two full cartfulls of stuff, spending almost 4,000p. When it was obvious they didn't know I explained to her about tipping. She thanked me and did tip. I didn't see until too late that she tipped 100p!

Our pesos are just Monopoly money to the novatos. ;-)

Christmas came early(or perhaps late in this case)...And seeing many folks I have seen there with large purchases are not tipping this may help average it out...

I think the tip was absolutely wonderful. They work hard and deserve every peso.
I always tip large when grocery shopping.

But at the same time remember it is the same issue for all tipping here. You are the guest, not the people living here. So when overtipping, you make it hard on the locals as this is then the new norm. I have heard from many locals friends of mine having issues at some times getting a cab for example as the cabs would rather drive a tourist who will tip them more. You start seeing a different level of service between locals and tourists. We should as the locals do and tip accordingly.

I'm not a tourist and will tip what's deserved.

Over the years, I try speaking Spanish to the "baggers" (in Mexico they are called "cerillos";), and they always remember me and ask about how I am. Recently, I saw one cerillo lady in Waldos and asked her why she changed locations. She told me but I'd rather not state the reason here.

Wanderer - From what I believe, she had some disagreement with the other cerillos/baggers regarding shift change. As a senior citizen, there are not a lot of options to receive tips for baggers, so these positions are valuable for them.
