AC can be amazing!

by Talley Ho @, Playa la Ropa, Saturday, June 22, 2019, 18:54 (63 days ago)

It's 6:40 pm and we broke down and turned on the AC. It's wonderful, a treat!

We regularly get asked how the summer is here, and we always respond with how much we love it-it's green, it rains, it get's hot, we are happy.

We have a weather station that we have been very slow about putting on weatherunderground, we have what we need to do it, just not the time!

During the winter and spring, we averaged lows of about 70 degrees F (sorry Rob, we are still learning C) Highs ran about 86. Now that summer is here, we are running lows of about 80 and highs of about 91. Not that big a difference, but shocking in how much difference it makes!

The ocean has gone from 80 in March to 86 this morning. Bathtub delightful!

The tourists, for the moment, are few and far between. The world is moving at a slower pace. We are all hoping for more rain soon, but the world is incredibly green, the greening up took less than a week and the flowering trees and plants, breathtaking. Fruits are seasonal here, and some of our favorites are here now.

Dealing with the heat is classic: Do everything early and at a leisurely pace. Take a siesta, or at least hang out/read/whatever for the afternoon. We take the dogs out for their hour long run and swim at 6:20am. We leave for our paddle by 7:30 and are back by 9. The temps are perfect then, and safe.

AC is a luxury that we treat as such. The electricity use can be pricey, but it's all relative. For those of you that monitor these things, we have a large house, two refrigerators, microwaves, 4 computers, washer and dryer, and loads of ceiling fans. We are very careful in their use. Our last electric bill for two months used 524 KWH. That's not bad, but the highest we've ever had. With care, electricity here is affordable.

Come now!! Summer is different and delightful!

"Ours was 465 Kw. 481 Pesos. Ceiling fans in every room.

My average per bimonthly CFE bill is 300 kWh for 60 days, approximately 5 kWh per day.
NO air conditioner, but the other usual energy consuming appliances such as refri, fans, microwave, lights, etc.

IF I had A/C, I imagine it would go up to possibly 8kWh per day, depending on the amount of time an air conditioner is run each 24 hour period.
Is that correct, a 3 kWh increase (generally speaking) per day WITH A/C?

I would gladly pay the extra 18-20 pesos ($1.00 more or less) per day for the relief.
In fact I am now on the lookout for another rental that has A/C.
Waking up in a pool of sweat is NOT "cool" (pun intended).B-)

Well......you will find out if you go to the "DAC" rate the cost will be 35 cents American a Kwh at the current exchange rate as of 6-22-19. So you are telling me that for two months you used 8.75 Kwh a day AND THAT INCLUDED the air conditioner? Something is not right!!!!

Ah, but the secret is to not enter the DAC rate! So far, that has been easy for us in a huge house.

Check out the inverter technology. It cost us more, just under a year ago, but it's serious. We have 4 units in this place, two huge, two medium and they are amazing.

Admittedly we use them occasionally, but their numbers are shareable.

FYI Talley Ho is not FOS. I have lived in Mexico almost full time for 5 years including the summer months. I use the ac for 1 to 2 hours a day in the early evening.
Last CFE bill, 6.6 kw per day. The most I've ever used is 8 kw per day.

Do you live in a closet?

I am 100% led lighting, 1 Fridge, 1 40w UV light running for purified water, C-pap machine running at night, Gas dryer and cooking. My average is 9Kwh/day. SOMEONE is FOS.

I run an A/C in my office for at least 8 hours a day except Sundays and my last bill showed about 4.79 Kwh per day. I suspect either your math is wrong or someone else is tied into your meter. Remember, your bill is for around 60 days. ;-)

Rob - what's your secret? No A/C, only ceiling fans and our last bill was 7.75/day for the 60 day billing period. Are there different rates depending on neighborhoods like Playa Del Carmen? There the billing is every 30 days because people would freak out if it was 60 days. Moderate use in an 83 sq. mtr.apt was 3,000 Pesos 30 days!

I do not believe you! Yes 2 month bill. No one is on my line because when I leave the main breaker is off and my consumption is ZERO.

BUT if you have a separate bill for the office only you are smart to keep as many small bills as possible.

P.S. Is your air-conditioner a couple of ice cube trays and a fan?
Before you laugh, I know someone who did this and called it air-conditioning!

Yes, and air-conditioning unit with inverter technology can help allot, we also spent extra and appreciate the energy savings. You still can't run it all day and expect to stay out of DAC, but it can help. We were able to keep our rates in the low range using a similar strategy as Tallyho. Unfortunately our guests aren't as frugal and so many of them run the AC all night long so we no longer enjoy the lower rates, but it is possible when one is smart.

Yes we have considered that. Our goal has been to reduce our usage by installing solar though we aren't yet able to afford that. We do our best everyday to reduce our usage and encourage our guests to do the same.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but since we have so many electric rate experts here, I want to ask a related question. Is the rate for electricity the same in all parts of town? I know it is priced on an increasing scale depending on usage. The reason I ask is that I rent a very large four bedroom condo on the Ixtapa beach. I do not use any A/C. This year I switched from one unit in the same building to another unit and the price was over double. I don't remember the kWh, etc. but for three months last year the bill was US $220 and this year it was $480. The real estate agent said the beach units pay a premium due to their higher value. Is this true or am I being lied to?

Thanks
Juan

The rates are the same. There is a difference between commercial and residential rates.

What you could be feeling is the history. Once a meter enters the DAC rates, it's all about averages. You stay at that high rate until the 12 month average drops below 800 KWH each billing period. Then you will drop to the normal tiered rates.

Here is a link that explains it. Once you figure it out, it all makes sense. Until then, it can be confusing.

Every Sunday we log the electric meter reading and weigh the cat. For us it's the easiest way to monitor those two things.

Thanks, that explains it better than the RE agent. I did see the bills and the December/January bill was huge. Feb/march was way less kWh but still expensive. I know the owners were there for three weeks over Christmas New Years time so this explains it probably. It probably doesn't help that the maid brings in her family laundry to do in her spare time either.

It is all fluid. What you are willing to pay, what people say to you, and what the beauty of paradise is worth to you! But do check your CFE bill for the basics to make sure you are being billed appropriately. Do more homework, it's easy.

Unless the dryer is electric, laundry is nothing for the most part.

Another example which could fit your issue. The first bill that qualifies for the DAC rate is not charged the DAC rate. So last fall my first bill was billed at 1-B rate, and the next bill was DAC rate. Even though I used way LESS power on the second "DAC rate" bill my actual bill cost was much higher.

I am not so sure you are correct on how long it takes to get out of the DAC rate. I have left the DAC rate after two billing cycles 4 months. Unless there has been a recent change? I can tell you soon, should be out of the DAC rate in July.
