MSP-ATL-MEX-ZIH on Delta and Aero Mexico

by kathyMN @, Blaine, Minnesota, Wednesday, August 07, 2019, 12:43 (40 days ago)

With the number of flights to/from MSP/ZIH dwindling, costs rising, and/or requiring overnights, I decided to try a 2 stop that arrives same day on Delta/Aero Mexico next week.

I have exactly 2 hours to connect and MEX is the first point of entry. Assuming my flight from ATL to MEX is on time, will 2 hours be enough time to clear immigration/customs, collect/re-check bags, then clear security before getting to the gate for my ZIH departure? I should arrive and depart in Terminal 2. Anyone done this recently?

I haven't done it recently, but 2 hours has always been enough time for me to clear customs and make my connection from Ciudad de México to Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa. Just don't dawdle.

Its been two years since I've come down that way and a heavy rainfall in ATL made us miss the cconnection. had the plane from ATL been on time, then no problem.

The only time I went into Mex City with a connecting flight that was not code share, I took the shaft. It came in three hours late!

About 5 years ago, in early January, I took this exact flight to Zihuatanejo but only because the flight from Chicago to MSP (with a non-stop connecting flight to ZIH) was delayed by a snowstorm at ORD. Missed the MSP connection (only one of the week, I think), overnighted in Minneapolis, re-routed to early flight out of MSP to ATL that morning, literally ran to make connection in Atlanta, no problem with connection/immigration in MEX, and finally arrived (bedraggled and worn out) in Zihuatanejo later in the day. I didn't like the experience at all. YMMV, but, two connections (especially though Atlanta's airport) getting to ZIH made me vow "never again."

Nope. I like traveling to other countries...and other parts of Mexico. But, I will always "winter" in Zihuatanejo because of the great weather, beaches, food and the warm and friendly people.
