Our longtime friend and neighbor and one of Zihuatanejo original ecologists passed away yesterday.

La Maestra, as many folks called her, lived on the downtown beach at Casa "La Playa", across the street from our home. Her husband Sergio Castro passed away many years ago.

La Maestra was a member of a local group of ecologists who took on many powerful interests. They also won several important lawsuits including one that declared illegal the change in Zihuatanejo's municipal land use codes that allowed our hillsides to be invaded and "regularized", though state and local authorities continue to ignore the ruling. I didn't always agree with her causes, but I respected her and I supported her on most of them, including preventing the construction of a monstrous pier for cruise ships in Zihuatanejo Bay.

Her unassuming bungalows on the downtown beach are the last remnants of a bygone era, one that I don't think we should be in a hurry to let pass because I believe the older Zihuatanejo and its culture was a much more attractive place for our tourists, especially the ones with money, than the modern one in most respects, and her modest bungalows represent the culture most of Zihuatanejo's long-time visitors fell in love with.

Que en paz descanse.
