Because they can.

It's unfortunate, but the car rental places here require that you purchase everything. Period, or you don't get the car.

Years ago we tried to fight corporate about it with no luck.

Taxi's are so inexpensive here that between the combi's and an occasional taxi, we find that we use our car maybe twice a month.

The expense of a rental car is a lot more than regular taxi use, unless you live in Troncones or further out and come into town very regularly.

I rent from Hertz at the airport several times each year. I don’t have any problem declining all of the insurance.

Because Mexican Car rental agents are the scum of the earth....

The "price" is never the price.
Your'e lucky to get the car your supposed to.
They often try and jack you up on return for anything they can think of.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but its way overdue for some regulation.

The last time we rented a car was when we picked up the car at the airport to drive to Patzquaro. We had to take the insurance even though we had paid in the states. When we returned the car, they felt under the engine and came back with a little oil on his finger. They made us pay $150 US for damage.Since we used AMEX, I called them and was told to keep the receipt and when we got to fax a copy. AMEX contacted the Mexican headquarters and never got a reply back- we were given credit for the bogus charge and have not rented a car since. Have heard of other scams from the rental desks since our encounter. Before we had rented cars in Ixtapa and never had a problem. We wanted to drive straight from the airport to Patzquaro.

I think it makes more sense to hire a cab. Reasonably inexpensive and you can enjoy the view. We use Pedro Moreno 672-119-2398 Speaks perfect English.
