Checked Baggage Fees at Alaska

I know the first checked bag is US$ 30. and the second is $50., but does anyone know how much in pesos? I don’t want to bring a whole lot of pesos back to US, but I want enough on hand. It’s true I have to pay in pesos.. can’t use my Alaska credit card? (Which seems ridiculous since I’m flying Alaska). Thank you for your help.

I flew last spring with Alaska. I paid with a credit card. The card wasn't an Alaska Airlines card. The charge came through in pesos before being converted to USD. Sorry don't know if you can pay cash.

If the flight originates in Mexico and they charge you for your first piece of luggage the airline is in violation of Mexican federal law and will be fined by the federal government if you report them to PROFECO.

My Spanish isn't good enough to extract the gist....it's Mexican law that if the flight originates in Mexico, the airline can't charge a fee for the first checked bag? "Originates in Mexico" would cover every flight leaving from any airport in Mexico, wouldn't it?
Last year, WestJet charged us for our 1 checked bag on a Zihua-Calgary flight, which wasn't unexpected. What angered me was that the charge was in US$. What the hell? A Canadian airline, flying direct to Canada from Mexico, has the nerve to charge US bloody dollars.

And worse is a Canadian airline charging U.S. dollars in Mexico to a Canadian. Surely some bean counter had a good laugh when they made that rule.

When you book a flight on Westjet or AC from Zihua to Canada the charges are in US dollars as well. It`s pretty standard

Hola
We gave up flying Alaska from Vancouver BC several years ago. They required us to stay overnight in LA. This wasn't practical for us with our mutt.
We now fly AeroMexico. No baggage fees, no fee for the dog, no fee for food and no fee for booze. Sure there is a two to three hour wait in Mexico city before our 45 minute flight to Zihua, but it is worth it. Gives us lots of time to clear customs and have our dog cleared. When we arrive in Zihua, because it is a domestic flight, we just pick up our luggage and mutt, which are usually waiting for us after we get there from the plane, and head out for our ride.

Just another take...

We always go home with a couple of hundred (US) in pesos, so we have a little walking around cash upon landing in Mexico on our next trip. Like you, we used to worry about getting rid of the pesos before we left. This method removes that angst.
The worst case scenario is that my kids will have to trade in a few pesos when I kick the bucket. Because until then, there's always another trip to Mexico in my future. :-)

We always take home Peso's for our return trip the following year. It feels good not having to hit a ATM soon as we get here. We walked into Centro from Madeira for lunch today at Any's and get Peso's. Before we would not take any home. It really makes a difference on arrival saving some.

It's been my experience that if I use my Alaska Air/Bank of America visa card to buy Alaska tickets, the first checked bag is free. If you want to go home peso-free, you might ask friends to buy your pesos. Buena suerte, buen viaje Eli.

Carryon is free. First checked bag is US$30.00 and second one is $50.00 US. Let me know if I’m wrong, but am pretty sure that is the current policy.

If you use your Alaska Air/Bank of America visa credit card to purchase your ticket, your first checked bag is free. I am referring to the first checked (not carryon) bag. This from Alaska Air/ Mileage Plan website:

Eligible Alaska Airlines Visa® cardholders receive:
First checked bag free on Alaska flights for you and up to six other guests on the same reservation.

In Canada, the Alaska Airlines credit card is a Mastercard, not VISA, and I don't recall ever getting the first checked bag free, even though I only ever use my Alaska credit card to book.

I just looked at my Alaska card (Visa) and all it says is "Alaska" with the words "Milage Plan" underneath it. WE always get a one checked bag free (per person) when traveling to see my kids in Denver, but travel to Mexico with just a couple of carry ons. So I know we'd get one free checked bag going down but I cannot confirm that we'd get one checked bag coming home.

We're just chopped liver for Alaska Airlines up here in Canada. The only platinum in my Alaska "Platinum Plus" Mastercard is the 75 bucks they charge me annually. When I joined, their come-on promised 25,000 sign-on bonus points: "Enough to fly return to anywhere in Canada or the continental United States served by Alaska or our partners." So, I looked into flying to Boston....50,000 points. Maybe if I'd booked 2 or 3 years in advance.....?

Don’t you also get the $99 companion fare? With the taxes and the cost of the card that comes to about $200 for a companion ticket. We always use ours to go to Mexico ams usually save around $400 annually.

We used the companion fare last season. Booking from Canada, we flew Alaska/Horizon from Kelowna, BC to Seattle/LAX/ZIH and they quoted the fares for the whole trip in US $. Converting to $Can.... we could have flown cheaper using Air Canada or WestJet, at full fares. So much for the vaunted Alaska companion fare, at least for us Canadians.

I must be the luckiest gringo in Zihua (sorry, Rob!) because I have flown Alaska Air from LAX direct for as low as $108!
Now I can even reclaim the tourist tax which can bring it down to $75

Most carriers now, if you are not in their air miles program and do not have the corresponding credit card you have to pay a fee on all baggage- South West is the only one I know that doesn't. United you have to use your Explorer Credit Card to book your flight to get the first bag free- there is a hitch, you have to be flying also. Kathie was flying out west and when we booked her R/t because I was not flying she had to pay the baggage fee.
