Does anyone know about travelling by taxi in Zihua with infants (14 month and 2 1/2 yr old)? Do we need to purchase car seats when we get there? Can we expect local taxis to be pepared for this?

Some taxi's have seat belts, some don't.

We also have never seen a baby car seat used in this country. However, occasionally there is a poster who says that they did bring their car seats and used them.

We've taken at least four taxis per day for the past 3 months. I always sit in the back seat, and don't recall seeing one taxi with rear seat belts. Maybe I'm not very observant. What I have noticed is that the power windows on half the vehicles so equipped don't work....and are always frozen in the closed position. (Keeps out the rain....and the fresh air.) And a few taxis with wind-down window handles are sans-handles.....again, in the "up" position. Car seats for children? Nada. Maybe they're stowed in the trunk?

When we have asked about seat belts they pull up the rear seat. They are stashed under there if they have them. If not we pass. As to child car seats, never seen one here.

I must tell the truth. We ride Taxi's fairly regularly. I have never seen seat belts in any of them.

HOWEVER when I made that statement to a couple from Minnesota, she very vocally corrected me and said that fully half of the taxi's they rode in had seat belts.

In our car, we have seat belts and use them!

Functional back windows? Hit and miss.

Well, obviously, I haven't been observant at all. Both taxis today had rear seatbelts....AND operating rear side windows. Come to think of it, all vehicles manufactured in Mexico over the last decade probably come equipped with front and rear seat belts, by law. But, unlike Canada, where all jurisdictions require drivers and all passengers to wear seatbelts, it is still optional in Mexico.

the law here must be wear your seat belt because two years ago we got a ticket for no seat belts, maybe in a taxi it's different

Drivers are required to wear seat belts, no one else. That is the law for the country. States may require usage by passengers, I don't know.

I’m in a similar situation as you with the car seat thing. You’re going to a city where you will see 1 year olds sandwiched between mom and dad on motor scooters with no helmets.

There are actually awesome products on the market to help. Your 2.5 yo may be big enough for the ride safer travel vest. Look online, I’m cautious to recommend child safety products so do your research please. There are travel infant car seats that you can fold and take to dinner , beach , etc . Nordstrom’s sells a few online, but google it if interested.

The other option depending on budget would be hiring a taxi driver with a/c and nice newer car that you can basically hire for the day or days. Buy car seats or take on plane and leave with driver while they stay with you. I’m sure people have good recent recommendations for reliable drivers. I recommend this over car rental in case contemplating that route.

It's extremely unlikely you're going to find a taxi anywhere in Mexico carrying a car seat. The only case might be at an official taxi stand outside a resort or theme park, they might be able to get one if you insist. However, the chances of hailing a street taxi that has a car seat is slim to none

I suggest bringing a stroller that has a detachable car seat. You can usually bring strollers on the flight with you with no extra charge. Then you use the stroller as normal, then when getting into the taxi you pop out the car seat and put it in the taxi, then when you get to your destination, you snap the car seat back into the stroller.

An example would be Nuna Mixx2 stroller with the Nuna Pipa car seat. It works with seat belts only, and does not require a base to be strapped into the car.
