Free Covid testing

Don't you just love capitalism. We went out for dinner last night to Shortie's in Ixtapa. The couple sitting next to us were staying at the Sunscapes Dorado and said that the hotel is offering free tests for their guest who need them for returning to the US. I have not verified this, but if true, it sure may persuade some tourist setting on the fence that are hesitant to come to town.

Free Covid testing

by Keytime @, Saturday, January 16, 2021, 09:13 (87 days ago) @ catlover

Exactly. Needs to put on a large scale and promoted through Alaska Airlines, West Jet, United, ETC. Get out there that when you come here it is not going to cost you to go home. Show your passport with an arrival stamp and a booked flight to leave and you get your test.

Someone is paying for it somewhere, whether directly or not.

Interesting to me that people choose to travel at this time. Their own government puts a restriction. They expect someone else, that is already suffering from low tourism and lack of income, to foot the bill.

And be sure to walk a few hundred meters on arrival across the airport parking to hail a 300 Peso taxi on the highway and stiff the airport taxis that are 600! How much was the airfare?

There is a recurring discussion on the board of how to save 300 Pesos from the airport. I believe they refer to the airport taxi mafia. Seems to go hand in hand with a free COVID test... Really

Free Covid testing... really?

by nicatnit, Saturday, January 16, 2021, 11:30 (87 days ago) @ mexicoman

Not really. If a hotel wants to pay for the test they do so expecting to profit from the guest staying at their accomodations. What you are referring to in the airport example is people wanting and being able to avoid outsized taxes. Which if that’s there prerogative and they don’t mind the hassle of lugging their stuff actress the street to save a few pesos, what’s the problem? Wait till UBER comes to town. That will hurt Taxis more than anything. Personally I don’t want to see that happen, but I don’t see how you stop it.

Not sure how someone got this into a taxi debate but it would help if you could stay focused on the subject matter so when we do a search in the future we can find relative information vs Babble.

Back to the subject. A tourist will spend on the average $150 per day per person. Some way more, some way less. If two people visit for 14 days that is $4,200 spent on hotels, meals, taxis, misc..... $4,200 into the local economy and the local government gives back to them 2 $50.00 (Est) Covid tests so they can go home happy customers and want to return. Even if they reimburse a local lab to do the work so they get paid, everyone wins.

Now should the people even visit? Lets look at History. The Spanish flu. 1918-1920. 2-3 years in length. # of immigrants into USA and Canada during the Spanish Flu was over 900,000. People were boarding ships by the thousands even during the pandemic.

So, how many people are on this site that had ancestors that got on ship at that time and came to the USA or Canada? I did. 2019 to be exact. Were they afraid? I bet they were petrified but they did it. Is it the same then as it is now? No, not even close. Now is way safer. Those that chose to stay home, great. Those that chose to live responsibly, great... You shovel snow, I will deal with sand between my toes.

That’s a pet peeve of mine, too. The airport taxis are all spiffed up & waiting to provide top-notch service to the arriving passengers, only to have el cheapo tourists who’ve spent hundreds & thousands of dollars on airfare & accommodation drag their baggage across the parking lot to save a few bucks. Or, even worse, cluttering up the combis with their luggage & preventing the locals from climbing aboard & riding comfortably.

Unfortunately we aren't all blessed with the same resources as you apparently are, yer highness. Try not to look too far down your nose at people who try to be thrifty so that they can enjoy a few extra cervezas on their vacation. There are very fine people on both sides.

Wow, all these smart people here, and no one had the answer to the question.

Transporte Terrestre at all airports, ports of entry and bus terminals are licensed by the federal government. The Transporte Terrestre service in Zihuatanejo is operated by several different companies. The public transportation taxis in Zihuatanejo are operated by several different unions called sindicatos.

by catlover, Monday, January 18, 2021, 09:55 (85 days ago) @ ZihuaRob

So, my next question is, who gets the money over and above what the actual cost of transportation would be? In other words is it the taxi companies or the Federal government/airport?

They can barely survive on the income they generate. Part of their licensing is that they must maintain their vehicles and buy new ones regularly. Considering that for several months a year there is very little tourism that arrives by air, they barely get by on what they earn. Their return trips back to the airport are without paying passengers and they must await the next flight arrival for more passengers. Not like a local taxi who can essentially pick up a fare anywhere.

Times are tough for the taxis for sure. In October we went to Rubens for lunch from the Azul Grand. The taxi driver asked if we were coming back after we ate which we were so he just waited. Didn’t even want to be paid until the round trip was completed.

I understand times are tuff and I personally think the everyday fares are cheap, but my question is who is getting the extra amount for the higher fare charged from the airport to Zihua vs Zihua to the airport. Aside from all that, I can't believe how expensive gas is also.

The price of gas in Mexico at a Pemex, which is what we have here is government controlled. It hasn't changed significantly in many years. It's expensive compared to some countries, cheap compared to others.

As I understand it, airport taxi concessions, worldwide are something that are bid for and are expensive in just about every country of the world.

I thought Rob explained it quite well in his response. Airport taxis are required to have newer vehicles, higher maintenance and cleanliness standards, etc. And yes, I am sure there are "licensing" fees to be paid for the privilege of being part of that fleet. We use them upon arrival since we do not travel light.

Most people don't like feeling that they've been taken, no matter how much spending money they have. When a price is fixed high in an otherwise competitive & fair market, feels like a scam regardless of reality. If it is a taxation or otherwise a government deal, I'd much prefer them collecting an arrival tax. But if just a monopoly or collusion thing, no esta bien. Meantime, I would never choose to drag my bags out onto the highway in blazing sun just to save a few hundred pesos....

If you want to experience a REAL mafia cab control go to the Caribbean. St. Thomas and Granada, for example, charge $18 PER PERSON in a van to take you even the shortest distance. Tho Cabo is almost as bad.
