As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 2,072 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (3 more than yesterday), 164 that have resulted in fatalities, 53 that are currently active, and approximately 1,722 that have recovered. Numbers continue falling, and I expect Guerrero's Semáforo Rojo will change to Naranja next week.

Many of us were gladdened and relieved this morning to finally hear from our friend and local radio talk show host Sergio Vázquez Rosas after a couple of weeks of silence. We knew he had been ill, and even though he tested negative for Covid-19, apparently it's what he's been fighting.

Our local mayor continues misleading the public about what's going to happen to Playa Manzanillo with the construction of a 1200 room hotel and convention center, and the beach itself is never mentioned when the matter is mentioned on local radio talk shows. Truly sad, because it looks like most people still have no idea what's going to happen there. And too many folks fall for the promise of new jobs, ignoring those that will be lost with the addition of yet another All-Included hotel to our community when we already can't fill the lodgings we already have. The dying and decaying shopping centers in Ixtapa really speak to the problem, except this time it will be Zihuatanejo that will lose as the new hotel undercuts prices locally owned lodgings can afford to charge. Never mind the loss of one of our jewel attractions, Playa Manzanillo itself. Please if you can, help spread the word and continue sending messages to the people who can stop this. Gracias.

Traffic to/from New Resort

Thanks for yet another beautiful photo! They’ve sure helped a lot of us get our daily fix during this winter from hell.

If that resort gets built, what is your opinion of the likely traffic increase on Escénica La Ropa? I know traffic to/from the airport would get there directly via the new road. But wouldn’t hundreds of workers (maids, chefs, waiters, maintenance crews, other staff) and at least some supply trucks (food, water, etc.) likely use Escénica La Ropa? Not to mention guests day tripping to walk around Zihua or Ixtapa before they go back to the resort for their AI meals.

I am envisioning that road getting very busy, and noisy, and wonder if the folks who own condos or homes along it shouldn’t consider getting more involved with the issue before they have a thoroughfare right in their backyard (or front yard).

Maybe my guess is wrong, so wondering what you think. Thank you for keeping the attention on this planned project.

That's a valid point.
I live in a condo in one of the buildings on Escenica La Ropa.
And I live in a bifurcated world.
I live on the downside and protected from the road and traffic almost to the point that I can forget it exists.
HOWEVER when I walk out the front door I am reminded that I live on a (almost) (fume-laden) highway.
You may have given me the spur to get active...can I tie myself to a huge earth mover??

It is not just this development. If you have flown over the mountain you will see roads carved out everywhere. It is my understanding that the development includes homes, condos, restaurants, shopping. “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

No, the hotel is all by itself. The other developments are Punta Garrobo, Cerro del Vigía and one other whose name I don't know, if it has one. It's a damn shame corrupt and immoral "authorities" changed the zoning to allow squatters that they themselves settled (and even got foreigners to help them by building schools, a requirement for legalizing a squatters' settlement) in exchange for votes (impoverished people are their cannon fodder and cake at the same time), because the same zoning change also allowed the devastation and development of the peninsula between Bahía de Zihuatanejo and Bahía de Potosí, which should've been designated as an Área Natural Protegida. But pretty plants and cute wildlife don't make politicians and their backers wealthy, and they are some of the greediest MFers on the planet!

What do I know, but it seems to me the many condo “associations” (CVM, KauKan, Xiguacan, NAO, Ensueno 10, and more) could consider getting involved if the traffic issue is a real concern and possible detriment to quiet usage and/or values.

I am not and probably never will be a citizen of Mexico (although I have heard I qualify for German citizenship since I was born there) but do they have "Propositions" at voting time here?

I would hope that beyond looking out for their own selfish interests, residents, property owners and repeat visitors would care about saving one of Zihuatanejo's prize jewels and attractions such as Playa Manzanillo from effectively being privatized and obliterated.

Great point and I agree. I want that world. Zihuatanejo deserves that world.
But sadly, and all too often, people don’t get off their keesters until something hits them in their wallet.
Both the altruists and the capitalists are welcome to join forces in this cause.
