As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 2,426 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (1 more than yesterday), 194 that have resulted in fatalities, 5 that are currently active, and approximately 2,077 that have recovered.

Local news services are reporting that foreign tourists are clamoring for internet service at Playa Las Gatas. WTF? Please don't do that. We have enough trouble trying to keep a road from getting built there. If you need internet at the beach, please go to a different beach.

Not a day goes by that I don't give thanks to be exactly where I am and with one of the most amazing persons in the world.

Watchin' the waves roll in. Then I watch them roll away again...

Their mobile phones should work fine there. They can create a "hot spot" with their phones.

Most likely they want it for saving on data limits.

Never looked for WiFi at Las Gatas, but, Friday I saw a sea turtle twice, a baby octopus and LOTS of those beige and brown spotted eels while snorkeling there!

I hope that baby octopus survives. At the rate locals are overfishing everything, it's just a matter of time till they go the same way as the red clam. We shouldn't even be eating octopus in the first place! They're intelligent creatures that deserve our respect and protection.

I remember our area of Troncones before we had internet, telephone or even electricity. I didn’t want any of them. Of course, that all came. I still relish the memories of no distractions from the “outside” world, reading extensively during the daytime and preparing dinner late in the afternoon while there was still light.

Once each week (after sunset so I could get a semi-good shortwave signal), I would listen to CBC World Report. That gave me enough information about the rest of the world.

I’m no Luddite in a cave. I enjoy amenities. But I also appreciate getting away from hubbub. I hope the operators at Las Gatas don’t destroy what they have and that visitors to that beach appreciate the experience it currently offers.

Man, I hear dat! When I first lived here in '74-'75 we also listened to radio in from somewhere in the States, Mystery Theater in the evenings and Casey Cason's Top 40 on weekends. Got a lot of reading done and even wrote a few letters. Then they built a road to our house in El Almacén and the area went downhill quickly. Same thing happened in La Ropa when first they straightened the road that use to wind way back into the huerta de cocos, then later it got paved and all the damn buses and weekend warriors started showing up with very little money to spend but leaving lots of trash behind. Things haven't changed much for the better. Now folks looking for the enchantment that Zihuatanejo used to have in abundance go to Troncones. Careful not to allow the same mistakes to be repeated where you live. At the rate we're going in 10 more years Zihuatanejo will be Acapulco del Norte. :-(

¿Tumbando bosques?

No, didn't tear down any forest, but I'm almost ashamed (but not quite) to tell you that my next extend trip there will be paid for by the gains I made selling my stock shares of Cemex company. And last several year's Mexico trips were paid for by profits made when I bought and sold stock in Fomento Economico Mexicano. Yup, one of those capitalist bastards. But hey, at least I put it back into the Mexican economy.

Progress: I have done some traveling by Motorcycle, mainly off-road. A few years back I did 16 days of off road riding in the country of Laos. Laos was in the middle of massive change brought on by China investment to get natural resources, mainly water and power. We knew we had to do this trip now before the remoteness was all gone.

We ventured into some very remote areas, totally inaccessible by 4x4 or anything other than a motorbike or water buffalo. We entered into villages with no power, no running water, No motorized machinery, etc. What we noticed was how clean the villages were, how the people skin was clean and healthy, they were in good physical condition. Everyone was busy and looked happy, although somewhat curious on why 4 white guys would be wandering around a jungle. We had one guy with us that spoke Lao, Vietnamese, Thai and English. So we were good and the locals relaxed.

These villages differed greatly from those with Power, TV, Internet, ETC. Same size villages, yet the ones with Progress were dirty, garbage everywhere, many were overweight, complexions had many blemishes, people just sitting inside the raise huts watching Thai soap operas. Maybe this is how the Native Americans / First Nations see what happened to their land. Progress is not Progress.
