More people are getting tested for Covid-19 at the Clínica de El Embalse, and no surprise, there are currently 144 active cases confirmed in Zihuatanejo, which means the real number may be as much as 3 times that. Thank goodness people are getting vaccinated. Hopefully the process will speed up now as more vaccines are available and the people responsible for administering them streamline their administration. Still seeing too many tourists not respecting sanitary conditions.

Now the government wants to "Blue Flag" Playa La Madera, meaning banning pets and not allowing people to bring their own food and drinks or chairs and umbrellas. The government is apparently trying really hard to run off a significant portion of tourists while catering to a very few influyentes. They offer lies and excuses such as a large portion of international tourists seek destinations with Blue Flag beaches. Maybe in Europe, but not our traditional tourists who have sustained us and allowed many of our local families to prosper for the past 50 years or so, while also contributing much to the well being of our community. Never mind they are reneging on an agreement made by around a hundred folks during the administration of Eric Fernández B. including restaurant and lodging owners, turisteros and property owners who all voted NOT to ban pets from the beaches at that time, and who to my knowledge have not changed their position. We don't have enough tourism to be running a significant portion of them off. Some La Madera residents have already expressed their opposition to the proposal. This local government appears determined to ruin our local tourism industry and instead pretend Zihuatanejo is some other destination. A recipe for disaster when we pretend to be something we aren't.

The new waterfront "highway" requires a lot more sweeping to keep it clean.

Referring to the local gov't., you know where they can put that blue flag? But it would be out of sight at least!!

Just curious, for every 100 tourists that visit Zihua, how many do you think show up with a dog?

Of course you would say that, obviously you are a "catlover"! I am one in a hundred! My puppy likes her walks on the beach.

PS: I haven't seen too many people walking cats on the beach.

Don't get me wrong, I also love dogs and have no problem with residents and there family pets or long term visitors who bring them along. Just the 1-2 week tourists who think they'll suffer from pet separation anxiety if they can't bring Fighto on vacation. I've never heard of anyone poo poo a vacation destination based on pet policy. But then again I don't have an agenda that would require fabricating numbers to the affect.

Maybe your concern should be dealing with large numbers of free roaming dogs in Zihua. We personally witnessed a stray dog walk up to the stage in the Barracuda bar, lift it's leg and take a piss on it. Ever wonder how many visitors don't return because of all stray/wild dogs that roam the beach, neighborhoods and the local restaurants.

Once again, your ignorance is showing! There is an SPCA in Zihua that has been operating for over forty years. It is called SPAZ! Google it and educate yourself!

ZIHguen The Stupidities

by catlover, Wednesday, July 21, 2021, 12:48 (98 days ago) @ Quadra Paul

So what are are you saying Paul, the dog never pissed on the stage, there are no wild dogs roaming the streets, beaches and restaurants of Zihua or there aren't any tourist that have a problem with it? Simple put what is the reason for your reference to me as being ignorant. Or are you just in one of your typical nasty moods where you next call for Rob to give me the hook because you don't agree?

ZIHguen The Stupidities

by Quadra Paul @, Wednesday, July 21, 2021, 21:59 (97 days ago) @ catlover

Once again your ignorance takes centre stage! SPAZ has been rescuing dogs off the street for all that time. They take them in, give them their shots, neuter them and then find them a home. Take a look around ans see how many locals are out walking their dogs, taking them for a swim at the beach and generally giving them a loving home! They haven't saved them all but it's a lot better than it used to be. It has now spread to Troncones and Barra de Potosi! Viva los Perros!

I resent your insinuation about fabricating numbers. If you can't have a conversation without insulting people, maybe you should just stay quiet. Why would you say such a thing?

A 2-week vacation without a family member is unacceptable to most people nowadays, and thank goodness. No one likes to be caged or sent to stay with strangers while the rest of the family takes a vacation.

HOMELESS, ABANDONED and UNSUPERVISED dogs are a different problem for a different topic. Not the subject being discussed, but too often the excuse used to discriminate against them just like it's used to discriminate against humans.

Exactly, I choose Zihua as a destination because I can bring my dog with me for a month long visit. On a trip in March, a young person in an oficial looking shirt and hat came up to me on Madera beach and said we could not use a small 'paragua' as shade for my aging pup! She also told me I could not sit on the beach with any type of shade!

On my next trip for the month of June I stayed in Troncones, no problems there. I used a big beach umbrella for shade, a blanket to sit on and had picnics on the beach.

As a consequence my tourist pesos also stayed in Troncones.

@catlover
:megusta:

You made some good points.

Though, I can understand that IF people didn't find an agreeable "pet policy" at a vacation destination that they are considering visiting accompanied with their animal, they would not go there.
I haven't heard any statistics on how many people DON'T visit Z, or any other area for that matter, due to the fact that there are "stray/wild dogs that roam the beach, neighborhoods and the local restaurants."

And don't forget about the uncontrolled, repetitive, constant sustained noise contamination nuissance, which consists of endless barking that goes on in most of the colonias, as well as in some "nicer" areas where people are paying good money.
I have around ten dogs (at least the auditory portion of them) living in my habitación, that their disrespectful, inconsiderate, selfish & irresponsible owners think I enjoy having and listening to at all hours of the day, night, and early a.m.
Yeah, right, exactly what I need for my peace & quiet.
Move to get away from that noise pollution?
Just about all houses have dogs, so it's virtually impossible to escape that noise pollution, other than to try and figure out where there may less of it, which is impossible to do.

The cat/dog topic is always controversial with loads of bickering about the many issues related to it.

All I can say is you must be relatively new to Zihua. 15-20 years ago roaming packs of unowned dogs on the beach was definitely a problem but the years of the spay/neuter program since has turned that completely around. There are not many stray animals on the street or beaches anymore. Yes, there are a few that are allowed to wander but they usually have a home and are generally well fed and cared for.

If you call 37 years of experience and over 21 years of local residency here in Z, then yes, I am "relatively new to Zihua".

It may be less than "x" years ago, but I still see many more than "a few".
"Not many" is a subjective term.
I need objectivity and actual real life statistics to make a proper determination on this, and most other issues.
My perception based on 1st hand observation, as I always WALK from one area or colonia to the next, is that I see it as a major problem in some areas.
If someone in their judgement believes that the situation is under control, and is NOT a problem, so be it.

Let the bickering begin :badass:

Since you insist on changing the topic I wanted to discuss, how many dogs have you adopted or taken to be neutered/spayed over the years here? We've adopted at least 6 over the past 3 decades, and I've lost count of how many we've taken to SPAZ to be operated and others we've found homes for. It's one thing to talk the talk, another to walk the walk. Strolling around town doesn't count. ;-)

Reporting them to the city is something those of us familiar with "the system" avoid at all costs. I'd rather see a dog alive and being a nuisance on the beach or street than dead. The last time there was a large roundup of dogs, they took them and put them in a corral and shot them while the dogs ran around in terror. The current administration shows no progress on the matter. They just want to sell cement to the public works projects.

I purposely did not mention the horrific end to the stray dog population. I had actually befriended a couple of them and still miss the relationship. But at least SPAZ is now keeping it under control where those extreme measures are not longer necessary. Are they still poisoning the pigeons?

Just curious, for every 100 tourists that visit Zihua, how many do you think show up with a dog?

I have contact with at least 5 people a week seeking to travel with their pets. So multiply that by whatever factor you think appropriate. Not to mention the lodgings who have historically had a considerable clientele due to their "pet-friendly" policies. But it's not the point. We can't afford to lose any tourists, and people who travel with their pets tend to have the purchasing power we need to sustain our community. And then there are LOCALS, remember us? We should be the FIRST consideration, but this administration has been pandering to influyentes, land thieves, alcoholics and bootlickers while ignoring ITS OWN ESTABLISHED OLD FAMILIES. Because so many people here are related, and because so many people seek favors from the politicians in power, I'm one of the very few people of an established local family who speaks up, but the people whom I speak for and who agree with me are considerable and respectable. I'm not a lone voice in the crowd by any stretch of the imagination.

As a La Madera property owner I'm perfectly happy with the beach staying as it is, as long as dog walkers pick up their dog's deposit.
