El Huracán Nora

It's been raining pretty steadily since late yesterday afternoon. The wind gusts every now and then, but here in the bay the hills shelter us from the worst of it. But the waves sure as hell picked up during the night, washing through all the new palapas and all over the waterfront walkway.

In Ixtapa on the webcam for the Holiday Inn workers can be seen stacking sandbags because the waves washed into their pool. Every one of those structures in Ixtapa and much of the rest of our coast was unfortunately allowed to build on the beach without leaving any natural barrier area. You know, like a sand dune.

I expect there won't be much left of the enramadas at Barra de Potosí. Once that lagoon starts draining it eats the beach where all those restaurants have been allowed to build.

Most of the daily regulars are enjoying their hot coffee at the Café Caracol on our downtown corner. The few folks I've seen out this morning are locals, many enjoying the hurricane weather. Casa Arcadia's workers went through the motions of setting up all their tables and chairs, so if anyone wants to come watch as Nora passes and slams much of the coast on its way towards Baja California del Sur, now's a good time.

Yes, water and surf has been high on Playa Blanca.

I've seen Playa Blanca and Playa Larga cut off from the rest of civilization by flooding waters of storms like this making the roads impassable. If you're there I hope you're stocked up and prepared for the worst. Take care!

As of 11am Saturday on Playa la Ropa we have had 14cm of rain (5.5 inches) from Nora so far, since midnight 8cm of rain (3.1 inches)

Highest wind gust in the last 24 hours was 21 mph.

It's been pretty steady, it's really nice.

Our favorite tree across from us, a big parrotia came down in the wind and landed on the office of the Residencias Villas del Sol. The big flamboyant tree next door came down but doesn't appear to have done much damage to the house.

A damn shame about the trees. Too bad no one will try to save them. Especially the parota. They’ll be divvying that one up into slabs and planks as quickly as possible.

If you're planning on going to or returning from anyplace south of La Barrita, there was a landslide at El Calvario during the early hours around 3AM, and I believe the road remains currently blocked.
