Looking for a cab driver referral.

We spend 4 months of the winter in Zihua, and while we don't use cabs a great deal, it would sure be nice to avoid some of the cab drama associated with overcharging and some of the outrageous stories they tell.

-Some English would be needed, despite trying, my Spanish is still no bueno (my Thai is even worse when we go there!!)

-Charge the posted rates, simple as that! Despite being chastised by our Mexican friends for tipping cab drivers, we probably will continue to tip modestly.

-Have a reasonable car. Some Cabs in Zihua are very nice, some are OK and some are beyond their safety being in question. As long as it looks good enough for me to put my grand kids in, we are fine.

So, if somebody had the name and number of a Cabbie that we could call directly when we need them, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Just ask "Cuanto Cuesta?" (How much) before the ride and he
is committed to the price he states.
You would have to learn some numbers in Spanish but that is simple.

I've generally found that asking what the price is, set's you up for the inflated tourist rate. It's like, if he doesn't know the price I'll hit him with the extra.

When we hop in a Cab with our Mexican Friends, nobody asks the price. When we get to where we are going money is handed to the driver and he gives change back in the correct amount for the published fare, no tip is given nor does the driver expect a tip- all pretty simple.
When I ask "how Much" when we are by ourselves it's never, ever, been the published amount!

Our Mexican Friend Melissa, once slapped me for not taking my 5 peso change from the driver, no! no! no! she said! LOL....

Instead of me guessing what you mean, why don't you just say?

Hola
We always used to walk (never at night) or take combis in the past
But now with covid and getting older and more crippled, we take taxis. We rarely have any problems with taxis. A few have ripped us off, but we just note the number and never use them again. We have a favourite driver who has always been good to us. Just find a driver that you trust and use him or use his advice. Best to find your own favourite driver.

Your friends don't ask the rate when getting out of the taxi because they already asked what it was. It isn't hard at all to familiarize yourself with the official rates. If you are quoted an unauthorized rate, say no gracias and take another taxi.

My experience is the polar opposite of yours. Asking the rate never sets me up because I already know what they are, but it gives the taxi driver the opportunity to be honest.

ALWAYS ASK THE RATE BEFORE TAKING A TAXI.

And tipping for an unearned service as you do will cause taxi drivers to believe you have money to throw away so why not gouge you and other foreigners. Although it's something you do elsewhere, it's not something we do here.

The absence of any listings for many of the colonias on the official fare sheet, underscores the reason for always asking what the fare will be prior to getting in a taxi.

The official rate sheet actually includes most of the colonias. I just don’t feel like listing them all. If you ever have a doubt about the fares ask to see their rate sheet or call their office.

While I can refer many excellent drivers to you, they can't always be available to take you wherever you might want to go, and it's better to just be able to pick the driver you want from the group at any taxi stand or from the streetside. You can also always call for a driver and ask them for one who speaks English. The operator can even tell you how much the ride will cost as long as you know where you are and where you want to go. The only Spanish you need to speak is "Quiero un taxi en ____ (where you are)___ para ir a ___(where you're going)___." She'll tell you the number of the taxi and the fare if you ask "¿Cuánto cuesta?"

If you don't like the look of the car, if the driver quotes you an unauthorized fare, or if the driver isn't wearing a facemask, take a different taxi.

Rob knows!!!

We always taxi'd until we were here forever and decided that we wanted a vehicle that would transport us and our dogs. We didn't make that decision until Covid hit.

Very very occasionally we would have a taxi ride that we considered an, "E ticket ride," and thought that it was a great way to go.
