Insurance for Travel on Expedia

Just before you do checkout on Expedia
they ask if you want to pay a small sum for insurance.
This makes no sense to me because all my Expedia transactions
have a clear paper trail and they will usually cover the cost if there is any monkey business. Is there any reason at all to pay this fee?

Getting a refund is like pulling teeth

I don’t mind looking at sites like Expedia as part of my searching for fares. I always book directly.

Once I booked a car reservation through a third-party. (It was WestJet.)

When I arrived at Zihuatanejo, the company (Hertz) said it didn’t have my reservation. I provided a copy of the reservation confirmation. They looked up the confirmation number and said the reservation had been cancelled two days earlier.

I immediately went to the WestJet counter. WestJet was no help at all. They said that they didn’t actually make the car reservations. They contracted with a company in Ireland who did the reservations. Hertz would not honour the rate. I took a car at a higher rate.

Neither WestJet nor the Irish company would provide any relief.

Now I book directly.

It still doesn’t solve the problem. Last December I made a reservation directly with Hertz, arrived at the counter with my reservation, and they had no car.

I made a reservation directly with Hertz Mexico for a car for my arrival yesterday. Again they had no car. I showed Hertz the reservation. They confirmed on their computer that they had the reservation but had no car.

I felt like Jerry Seinfeld.

But at least now I know where to direct my unhappiness. ????

That is an interesting story.
I once booked a place called Liam's
Guest House in Trinidad. Taxis warned me there
Was no guest house in that area...Hislop Street if memory serves.. Damn the torpedoes, I
had them drive me there. After 45 minutes of U-turns
and confusion the neighbors informed me there had never been any guest house
There. Expedia called the jerk and he would not return the money so Expedia refunded me. Also this guy had the amazing ability to suppress my TripAdvisor reviews. Insiders told me that's not easy.

Usually that type of insurance is meant to cover a refund if you can't take your trip for some reason. So if there is weather in your area that prevents you from flying out they may provide a refund for a reservation that otherwise is non-refundable.

I went back and looked and it says Travel Protection.
Always seemed a bit gimmicky like "promotions" at hotels.
