State authorities report NO currently active cases of Covid-19 along the entire Costa Grande.

Zihuatanejo is zipped up tight. A beer depository was set on fire today. Streets are mostly empty. Almost all the businesses closed extremely early today, many never even opened, and panic buying of gasoline has long lines at local gas stations as rumors circulate of their eventual closure, too. Schools aren't opening this Friday, and local residents are quite uneasy at the moment. If only we had a real police force that walked beats, knew the neighborhoods and enjoyed the trust of the citizens. But we don't. So we hunker down and weather this out as best we can. Give the police and military a few days to catch up, to get a grip on things and to come up with a plan. In the meantime everyone is advised to remain calm but to stay alert. If you see something report it to 911 or to Seguridad Pública (numbers that should be on your cellphones if you live here). See my webpage for Emergency & Useful Phone Numbers.

While walking our dogs this morning, we saw a couple find a wad of bills on the walkway, and they assumed it was ours so they gave it to us, but my wife suspected it belonged to another couple who had just been taking photos in front of Plaza del Artista, so we hung around the area walking our dogs more slowly than usual, and sure enough the couple who lost the money came back looking for it and we returned it to them. Chalk up one good deed for the day! That felt good. :-D

Did anyone go for pozole today? Jueves pozolero is one of Guerrero's treasured traditions enjoyed all over the state and beyond. A shot of mezcal is customary with pozole, and Guerrero's mezcal is some of the finest. We like to buy our mezcal at the Eco-Tianguis "Sanca" held Saturday mornings from 8AM to 1PM in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero elementary school across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande. They have lots of other goodies there, too!

One of our hidden treasures for nature lovers and surfing enthusiasts seeking a stress-free relaxing vacation is Casa Delfin Sonriente, a B&B located on Playa Troncones less than a half hour's drive northwest along the coast from Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa.
B&B's in Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa, Troncones & Barra de Potosí

Although it was cloudy most of the day, it only rained a little during the wee hours of the morning, but the high tide and the mar de fondo has all the fishing pangas bunched up high on the beach.

Aside from your mention about " A beer depository was set on fire today"
do you think that THAT is the only thing involved in the commotion?

We know that this, that, or the other crime, be it big-time or small-time, is not particularly unusual.

My question would be:
What's the additional scoop that's so alarming, & causing the shut-downs?

Example: Around 8:45 p.m I was at Sam's Club, that normally closes at 10 p.m.
Just before 9 p.m., workers frantically went through the aisles telling the few customers that were shopping, to go to the checkout, as they were going to close early.
Una de las encargadas mencionó el problema de la violencia en la zona, y por ello, estaba cerrando temprano.
In contrast though, I wandered over to Soriana around 9:30 p.m., where it was business-as-usual, open until 10 p.m.

This, that, or the other crime be it big-time or small-time, is not too unusual.

Curious as to why you switched to Spanish for that last sentence. Reading other posts, I had initially wondered if the carefully-couched wording in some posts about "closings" were somehow connected to the start of hurricane season. But it's clear Zihua's "hurricane" has a human form.
Reminds me of a scare in Zihua well more than a decade ago, when the bad guys had supposedly issued a warning for everyone to stay off the streets in Centro one evening. Sitting at Salvador's original spot at the Adelita end of the footbridge over La Boquita, one gringo long-term resident warned us that we could be shot if we ventured into Centro. Were we brave or just stupid? We went, we survived.

Hola - No particular reason other than using Español here is a habit for me.
At times I'll use either Inglés or Español, or both in one reply or comment.

Rumors are flying and people are nervous. Best to remain calm and alert and not add more fuel to the fire.

What isn't being widely reported are the arrests that have been made and other details that old family locals with connections throughout the government have been discussing. I'm guessing and hoping it's because there are more to come.

Setting a date for the retreat of the military only tells the bad guys how long they have to hunker down before they can get back to what they were doing. It's not helpful information. Is it posted because of a lack or professionalism by the journalists or government spokesperson, or does it have a different significance? ;-)

The link isn't working for me: "Access denied" (Error code 1020)

Can you do an English translation and post it? Given the ominous rumours and chisme over recent days, I'm sure lots of Board participants are interested.

Not much there...only 4 paragraphs and the foto is archival.

The spokesperson says (paraphrasing) they are determined to get the drugs, guns, money and property out of the hands of the bad guys and stop their ability to perpetrate crime and violence.

The operation runs from June 7 to June 12.

That's the crux of it.

(On June 14, it becomes "Operation Everyone Thinks We Left Two Days Ago But Now Shit's About To Get Real".)
