TelCel SIM card

Our SIM card is probably 5 years old. One of us has to do a very fast trip to the US to pick up new boards, and we can't figure out how to tell if it is 4.2 or better so we can use it in the states.

Help please

Isn't a new SIM card less than MXN$50 pesos? Can you keep your old number if you buy a new SIM card?

The asistentes at the phone stores have always been very helpful. Stop by and ask one.

I'm told you can keep the same number, and hopefully the new contacts.

However, if we don't need a new one, why bother?

If you buy a new card and wish to keep your current phone number, the process must be done in Ixtapa Att. Clientes. Been there and done that.
Within the last 12 months. (why is 4.2 critical for you?)

Have to go to the US for less than two days and want to call home from there. Supposedly with the upgrades to the US systems, TelCel phones have to have a SIM card that is 4.2 or better.

Would ATT take care of a TelCel account?

What about using WhatsApp or Zoom?

He will be on the run. Landing at LAX, going to San Jose, driving to Santa Cruz, picking up and packing the boards, flying back to LAX then back home in about 45 hours. I'll buy a disposable TelCel phone with a SIM card so when he can't email me, he can call. We are kind of attached at the hips.

I was thinking that Wi-Fi on a tablet and WhatsApp wouldn’t need a new SIM card.

Not sure what Telcel plan you have, but I can call anywhere in Canada and the USA as well as all of Mexico just like they were local calls. I'm supposed to be able to use my phone the same in the States or Canada as I do here. Have you checked with Telcel?

We don't buy a plan, we have no one to call out of Mexico, or actually within Mexico! We will buy a 3 day plan for each phone while he is gone. Normally we get 100 pesos that last 60 days, and that is fine.

There has been a fair amount of publicity in both the US and from TelCel in Mexico that if you have an "old" SIM card, that isn't at least a 4 something, it will no longer work in the US. We are just trying to make sure we can talk while he is gone.

My understanding of the restriction doesn't have anything to do with the SIM card, it has to do with the capability of the phone. US cell providers are (have already) stopping supporting 3G networks to allow more band width for 4G, 5G and future enhancements. It's your phone that needs at least 4G connectivity to work in the US.

It's possible you will also need a new SIM but if your phone isn't 4G capable a new SIM alone won't help. I'm no expert but my SO and I both had to upgrade in the past year and needed new phones. The flip phone his carrier provided was a POS so he had to come kicking and screaming into the smartphone world.

Fortunately I bought him a new phone very recently, and it's 4G.

We just found out that both boards won't fit into one bag, as is required. One bag, up to two boards inside per person. So, we will both be flying up and doing the fast turn around, with one bag/one board each. No more phone concerns at least.

If the phone is new, it might have an e-sim, and in this case you might not need a SIM card.

We moved the old sim into the new phone so we would retain the phone number and our contact list.

You know us too well!!!

We lived in an area without them, but adored Tommy's Burgers, all of which came with chili.

We'll dine on, assuming things are walkable from our discount hotel at LAX for both nights, Taco Bell, Carl's Jr., Panda Express and other great junk foods. Other than getting our new boards, we are excited about hitting those places. OMG Chocolate shakes!!!

IF anyone has a suggestion for two nights at LAX, we'll each be carrying a 9 foot board bag and need the appropriate shuttles very early in the mornings, both days.

I plan to buy a day or two of a TelCel phone package so I can call the hotels and confirm that their shuttles, and room access can accommodate us.

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

We found "adequate" lodging for our dog girls for two nights, but we will owe them big when we get home.
