Alaska SFO direct to ZIH

Yesterday there were lots of options for us to get from Canada to Zihua....either via San Francisco or LAX.

Today? Looks like Alaska has dropped the SFO-ZIH flights entirely.

Might want to check their calendar as it appears that they have non stops only a couple days per week.

Looked at the week of 22 Feb/23, SFO direct to ZIH only on Wednesday and Saturday.
Looked at the week of 30 March/23, ZIH direct to SFO only on Saturday.

Goodness knows where that Wednesday flight goes, after it lands in ZIH. Doesn't appear to return to SFO.

Alaska has historically taken one day off a week from flying to Zihua even in the high season. Now with the SFO to Zihua flights, they are probably doing the LAX to Zihua on the off days, just a guess. Why worry when itineraries are only suggestions now?

No logic to their scheduling. Would be nice if they did three days a week from SFO and three days a week from SEA. This LAX layover crap sucks.

It’s been that way for as long as we’ve been going to Zihuatanejo, 20+ years. Their smallest aircraft seats 124 people. It flies almost exclusively in Alaska and they only have 11 in their fleet. I doubt that they could fill it 3 days a week out of Seattle. It is possible to make it in one day without a layover with a 6 AM flight out of Seattle. We tried it once but it meant getting up around 3 AM to make the flight. We now fly down the night before and use our Hilton points that we get from shopping, not sleeping, to stay for free near LAX. it’s not that big a deal.

That’s what we do now living in northern Nevada. Flight out of Reno to LAX in the morning can’t make the 10:20 am flight. So now we fly down the evening before and stay at Holiday Inn Express and take free shuttle to port in the morning.
It is what it is.
Nice when we lived in San Diego and drove up the morning of the flight.

Currently , the SFO flight to Zih returns to LAX on Saturday’s . The LAX flight to Zihua returns to SFO. We flew it last week . Seems odd but that’s what they are doing .

I don't know if the schedules for late February and early April would be the same, but what day of the week was that direct flight ZIH to SFO?

I'm trying to book on-line using Alaska airmiles, from Kelowna, BC to Seattle, SEA to SFO and SFO to ZIH. But none of the flight options shown include SFO. they're all SEA/LAX/ZIH and the same coming home.
I'm going to phone them to inquire. Is there some rule that says flights using Alaska airmiles can only be booked on-line?

Julian: are you the fellow that helped Salvador with his menu years ago? Any idea if he has opened somewhere else, and if so, where?

You do not have to book a reward flight on line. You can do it on the phone with them, but they will charge you for this. $25 I think.

I have pretty much given up on using my 140K+ Alaska points. I still check the website a few times a year, but I’m not going to pay to overnight in LA both ways just to use my points between Vancouver and Zihuatanejo.

You could go to Hawaii first class with those miles.

ANC-SEA-LAX-ZIH used to be pretty easy. We'd leave ANC at 12:30 and arrive at ZIH at 15:25. Twice as far as MSO-SEA-LAX-ZIH, but only $50.00 more. Now that we've moved from Alaska to Montana, ging down from MSO we spend one night in a motel, where we can leave the car for free until our return (cheaper than airport parking) and stay at motels in LAX going and returning. On the way back from ZIH to ANC we'd have to spend a night in SEA. Since our arrival in SEA was after 23:00 and our departure to ANC was fairly early, we'd sleep in the children's playroom on concourse A. There were rarely any kids playing that late, the benches were fairly comfortable and there was no loudspeaker overhead. The last few times we went to Zihua, we were unable to use any of my many Alaska Visa miles to upgrade to first class.

I think I'd go absolutely nuts and rarely travel if at all if I had to make that many stops, as connections drive me bonkers going up n down and wasting time.

I live in the suburbs only 20 minutes from O'hare, so going to Zihua was always a relatively quick trip of perhaps 4 hours.

Alaska changed our flights twice in November from LAX to Zihua. We had to book 2 extra days to stay in Ixtapa because flights were changed for two days earlier. A bit of a hassle to rebook rooms .
The good thing is, Alaska will pay for those two extra nights in Ixtapa. We just show Alaska the original booking and the extra two nights after we get home and they will reimburse.

We have had similar experiences with Alaska. Perhaps the best example of their customer service was when Covid hit and a ton of flights were being cancelled. We had a couple of flights booked. In return for not asking for a refund, they gave us over ten times the amount of miles we would have earned. We both got a bit over 300,000 miles, enough for 2.5 round trips to Europe in Business class. This spring we were scheduled to BWI and had to change to DCA as they had cancelled the BWI flight. They paid for the night in the hotel as we got in after midnight, paid for the rental car to get us to BWI and gave us each 30,000 miles (15,000 of which counted for status). We don't even look at other airlines anymore since we know if something goes sideways, Alaska will make it right,

We had to fly from Zihuatanejo to the California bay area in August, with paddle boards.

We flew to LAX, stayed overnight at the Fairfield, nice, great shuttles, close to the airport, Carl's Jr. next door and Ralph's across the street. Wonderful things for us. Breakfast was fine.

Think Tillamook sharp cheddar and Jarlsberg swiss. If anyone one wants to bring us a piece of two, we'll make of buy margaritas!!!

From there we flew to San Jose on SouthWest because the Alaska hopper planes wouldn't hold our boards. Did our thing up there and flew back Southwest the same day.

Stayed overnight at the FairField again, and caught the return flight from LAX to home with our boards, first class. LOVED IT!!! No stress, great food and drink. Nothing like checking our new boards and going to the lounge, getting great food (think sausage, bagels with cream cheese) and drinks and walking the 50 feet to our gate only to be fed champagne as soon as we got on!

We were the first ones off the plane as were our new boards. If we EVER have to return to the US, it's first class from LA to here.

May we never have to return.

Another hand up for Alaska. My previous job had me traveling a lot and always tried to get on an Alaska flight. They just seem a little better at hauling people around in airplanes.

Just flew Alaska to Portland, change in LA. Except for Kay making the air a little bumpy, it was flawless flight.

LAX's new CBP area is a looooooooong walk from the gate area.

OMG!!! We probably walked upwards of a MILE before we finally got to the customs immigration bench. There was only one restroom along the way, and one drinking fountain.

When I had to return to the US, probably 12 years ago with encephalitis and being marginally mobile, I would have been passed out along the way. I was traveling solo.

Welcome to the US, it's almost embarrassing to be a US citizen.

At least there is a restroom...

About ready to drop by the time I got to answer pointed questions about what I had been doing in Mexico, and what I was bringing back with me, ("living there", and "nothing";) and I'm in reasonably good shape for an old man.

Remember as a last resort, you can fly to San Diego, make your way slowly or quickly to the Tijuana airport, non-stop from TJ to Zihua, and vice-versa.

Alaska direct to ZIH: San Francisco or Los Angeles?

by Ironwood @, Friday, September 09, 2022, 12:55 (78 days ago) @ Padrino

We're thinking of using Alaska points from Kelowna, British Columbia to Zihua.
The only routing in the past was Kelowna/Seattle/LAX/ZIH, which necessitates an overnight in LA.
But with direct flights once or twice a week (in February) direct to ZIH from San Francisco, looks like we could go Kelowna/Seattle/SFO, hang around the airport for 4-5 hours, and get the SFO/ZIH flight at 7 am.

Question for crystal ballers:

With flight cancellations now almost the rule, rather than the exception, which flight might be more likely to be cancelled in February?:
----San Francisco to Zihua, or
----Los Angeles to Zihua ?

Alaska direct to ZIH: San Francisco or Los Angeles?

by Keytime @, Friday, September 09, 2022, 16:27 (78 days ago) @ Ironwood

I do not think it matters. IF they cancel a flight it will most likely be the SFO to ZIHUA than the LAX one. Then Alaska will still get you to LAX but the overnight will be on their nickel. I would book the SFO flight as that works better for you and if something gets canceled you will end up at LAX anyway.

Alaska direct to ZIH: San Francisco or Los Angeles?

by Dougschuler @, Denver, Friday, September 09, 2022, 20:43 (78 days ago) @ Keytime

The flight cancellations are usually to cities with multiple flights each day, not to a place where there is only one flight a day. From U.S. to Zihua Alaska only needs one plane and one crew each day.
