wi-fi access/ currency exchange
We will be staying at Barcelo 3/8-3/15- looking forward to time in Ixtapa and Zhiu! I was surprised to find that Barcelo does not have free wi-fi access for guests. (While my husband and I readily dis-connect from technology on vacation, we would like to give our 15 yr old the opportunity to "connect" a couple of times during the week.) I am looking to see if there are any small restaurants etc. that can easily be walked to for a snack/meal that might offer free wi-fi while dining. I'd prefer this vs paying the fee at Barcelo- just because.... Also looking for suggestions (outside of airport atm or Barcelo) for currency exchange with good exchange rates and minimal fees (US to pesos) within easy walking distance from Barcelo. We will bus out to Playa Linda and take the water taxis to Ixtapa Island and will visit the alligators/iguanas there- are there any other areas within walking distance from Barcelo where we might be able to see these as well? I am curious about your frequent reference to "walking distance" from your hotel. Do you plan to visit Zihua? You have the option of bus or taxi to go the 6K's into town. There you can certainly walk and see lots of things...mercado, shops, restaurants that could feed you for the rest of your lives and you still would never have tried them all! And most importantly...mingle with the people- locals, tourists and long term visitors. Don't miss Sunday evening near the basketball court..take a stroll along the paseo to the pier, maybe have dinner.
And of course here you will also get the best exchange rate...your debit card in any of the bank ATM's. Just withdraw pesos.
I hope I have given you some ideas to consider, and I really hope you won't miss the enchanting Zihua experience.

You'll find ATM machines right across the street from the Barceló.
Fisher's Restaurant at Marina Ixtapa is listed as one place that offers free wi-fi access in Ixtapa. So is the Westin Las Brisas hotel.
In Zihuatanejo the main plaza is a free wi-fi zone.

We plan to bus in to Zihu at least once. What goes on Sun. eves. by the basketball courts- basketball? Is that limited to locals or can a so-so kid from the US join in? Intentions for asking about nearby currency exchage (meaning like 5-10 min walk from Barcelo) is for quick cash access- hopefully better rates than airport atm or at resort? Is the use of atm recommended versus currency exchange? Wi-fi suggestions are good- thanks!

You've got an ATM right across the street from the Barcelo and they charge is about 40 pesos (about $3.15) for a transaction big or small so you may as well go for the max you'll think you need. Last week I got a rate of about 12.70 to the dollar so it came out to about 12.6 to the dollar on a withdrawal of 5000 pesos after paying the 40 pesos. It's a good deal and convenient compared to a currency exchange or standing in line at the bank.

You will always get a better exchange rate using an ATM rather than a currency exchange. Sunday evening in the town square, or here in Zihua at the basketball court, which is beside a sort of square, is traditional in Mexico. You will find lots of Mexican families and lots of tourists & visitors...just a really nice social experience. Activities vary from music, dance, kids' activities, and even basketball. I would suggest just go for the fun and the people watching and the mingling. So glad you are planning a bus ride into Zihua- it's just too awesome to miss. Enjoy your visit.
