Ok Cats hve been discused. Now what do I need to get my dogs home to th U.S. The government site says nothing is needed except the rabies certificate. My vet here says a health certificate is needed. Who knows the real answer? At customs they have never asked for anthing other then Do you have any dog food?

Helene--We have returned to the U.S. multiple times with our dog. Customs regs definitely require both rabies certificate and health certificate. We have never been asked for either when entering the U.S., but why take a chance. The one time you don't have it is when they are sure to ask.

When leaving Zihua the airlines always wants to see the papers my dog came in on and that was signed when entering the country. If they're dogs from MX, I would get the same papers you need to fly in with, health, rabies and external/internal parasites.
You can bring dog food into MX, enough to feed your dog for their stay, they can't take it away from you. My dog's on a special diet so I bring what we don't use home again, nobody has ever said a word.
If you are flying they are more rigid, but if you are driving they rarely ask... BUT we always have her health certificate and it MUST be within just a few days of traveling... as well as a certificate that indicates the date of the rabies shot. The Mexican vets are very good with these two documents, they cost very little and you get a little checkup while you are there. We will be crossing into the USA on or around the 13th of this month and then the USA/Cdn border a number of days later. SOmetimes they will ask about the dog food and have been known to confiscate it because you are not supposed to transport pork or beef over the border, I try to buy just dog food with Pollo for that reason but have not been asked about it either.

They CAN and WILL take special dog food away from you at the airport here in Zihua or in the States (Dallas). I've had Chuleta's Hill Sciene Diet KD food confiscated at both airports. The health certificate must be dated within 10 days of the trip and they have never checked when I drive (about 50 trips to Texas) but always check when I fly. Local vets charge $250.00 pesos for the certificate.

They've seen the dog food in my suitcase in Zihua and one of the girls in customs wanted to take it but her boss said "no, it's for the dog" My dog's on a raw food diet, I bring it in freeze dried and home again, nobody gives me problems, I bring in bags of dried chicken for treats, all kinds of stuff. I read somewhere on a Mexican website that you're allowed to bring enough food in the country for your dog's stay how ever long that may be. Of course since you live there that would be a lot of food!
