Without a doubt! We ran up from Troncones. Easy drive (stopped for breakfast in Patzcuaro). It's a steep climb so be prepared for cooler temps. Super easy and safe (comfortable). Rose's place is in the center and a wonderful place to stay....with a bitchin' website now.

And La Casona Rosa is without a doubt one of its treasures. Their cool new website makes staying with them even more of a pleasure! (Good job, Wil!)

Thanks for the suggestions from the Board we have reservations the last week of October there. They gave us a name of a taxi driver that speaks English that will pick us up at the airport and give us a tour of the area. We will catch the express bus that Friday to Ixtapa for a wedding we have been invited too that Saturday afternoon.- It is a long time from Jan to Oct between trips.

Thank You for this timely heads-up..... with equally appreciated user endorsements of Casona Rosa.
I have to make a little trip up to Michoacán soon, and this might just be a pleasant alternative to our regular stay in nearby Pátzcuaro, as it’s been (perhaps too many!) years that I have taken the time to explore-n-enjoy Morelia!
I’ll have to check the map, as my primary trip ‘targets’ are north of Zamora to Sahuayo (for my FAV sombreros!) and L O V E L Y Cocucho for yet another round of our equally prized Monster Pots.
In fact, I arrived Zihua after another Pottery Stop in the mountains outside of Chilpancingo, where we bought 2 / ordered 2 Bigger 4’ versions similar to the hand painted urns below. The casual graciousness of these genuinely warm Nahua people is near-delirious as Lorenza, our Potter, nonchalantly quipped “OK.... come back in two months and they’ll be ready.....”!!
Si, gracias otra vez, as I'll most likely check out Casona Rosa.

I'm not famliar with the style of pot on the right, but I've seen the others made in a village in Michoacan; don't recall the name.

The brown mottled pots are from Cocucho, Mich. but you can also find them in Patzcuaro or Tzintzuntzin Mich.
Good luck!

Morelia offers some of the finest artesanía from all over Michoacán. You could spend days wandering through their crafts markets marvelling at the exquisite work.

Indeed! We only had two days which certainly wasn't enough for but a taste:

And don't forget the food!

Oh yeah, and the AWESOME museum of modern art that also had a gum tree at the entrance (we have a gum wall here in Seattle).

2 or 3 years ago the museum in Morelia had a show of Diego Rivera's collection of pre-Columbian pottery. 2 rooms full of absolutely stunning pieces. Traditions Mexico offers a tour of pottery villages in Michoacan, among other interesting trips. I did that one a while ago with a couple of my potter friends from Anchorage and loved it. Highly recommended, even for non-potters.

Certainly a Good Recommendation, Señor, for those interested in more than just a vacationing suntan = http://www.traditionsmexico.com/
While geared more towards ‘group outings’ on the definitively Intro-Level for non-Spanish speaking adventurers, they are nonetheless a wonderful resource of specific regional information aiding more ‘independent’ travel, too. Email inquiries are ALWAYS answered in welcomingly concrete detail.
Rob and Emmet’s luscious reco to the local artesanías markets (nationwide!) is yet another cornucopia of info in learning of the specific area pueblos producing the various types of artistry on display.
Stopping to chat-n-ask various indigenous venders often sitting alongside adjacent mercado streets as to where they themselves are from, also “strikes gold”..... as that is how we inevitably found the remote little pueblito of San Agustin Oapan, whose beautiful painted pottery pictured earlier have become some of our more prized home décor and fav travel stops.
The “trick” frequently becomes finding someone who speaks both Spanish and their regional dialect (Nahuatl, Mixe, Zapoteca, Mixteco, etc.) in communicating such questions, THEN, eeking-out the info of scribbling a 'napkin map' of HOW to actually get to their pueblito, as most of these remote little villages are not even on ANY map!!
NOW..... if we could just find the “right place” to build our propia casa, as we indelibly have it already FULLY furnished (and ever-growing) with years of collecting The Treasures Of México!
