Loving Zihuatanejo!

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, Gro. México, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 09:10 (393 days ago)

Even with all its warts, I still find myself immensely grateful and satisfied to be here, to be a part of Zihuatanejo, to be a part of its culture, community and environment, even to have my friends and neighbors. I cherish every moment of every day here, whether out and about or just hanging around the home. The sights, the smells, the sounds, the tastes, the people, the warmth, and the snail's pace of the passing time. The easy-going and relaxed soul of Mexico fits me like a glove, and I have never felt more at home anywhere else. :vacation:

Your mileage may vary. ;-)

While I love, love Zihuatanejo and look forward to building our villa in Troncones soon, your words are exactly how I feel about living out here in the country!

I think those sentiments are true for most of us who choose to be here more time than anywhere else.

The Mexican Donzi? :wtf:

I believe that was one of the vessels confiscated by the Mexican Navy several years ago with a few tons of cocaine. If I'm not mistaken it is what locals used to call a tortuguero because it was designed for turtle hunting, but they have mostly disappeared since the turtle became a protected species.

Saw something similar, two of 'em (though bigger boats and engines), being used by the Colombian Coast Guard around the Islas Rosarios near Cartagena. They too had previous narco owners, crime was certainly paying for the young sailors who got to run around in 'em!

Four engines to catch a turtle?

The boat design is what I was referring to as a tortuguero, not the obvious modifications for a different use. It is a deep-hulled light vessel perfect for hauling heavy cargo.

Just to confirm that the boat in the photo is from the big bust in 2005. It is not a tortuguero but is similar in style to that type of boat used decades ago.

We were on the street at Bandidos the night the military brought in the boats. They were full of large gas tanks that looked like they had been running gas out to someone. The drug part I figure was true as well.

They could be fuel runners. I don't recall what happened to the boats that got busted with all the coke. There are two that look like this and I thought they might be part of that bust. The one I saw with all the fuel tanks that got busted last year was a pleasure craft from Marina Ixtapa owned by a gringo.

I've lightly penciled in September. What's it like there besides slightly desolate and humid (I assume). I was extremely lucky last time to be there for Carnival week. Does September have anything interesting going on? How about the rain? As a photographer, rain can provide interesting opportunities (as well as challenges).

September is Mes de la Patria with several important holidays and days of national observance, including our Día de la Independencia on Sept. 16 with the famous Grito de la Independencia the evening prior. Please see the Calendar of Holidays on my Community Notices & Events page for dates and specifics.

I love being in Zihuatanejo in quiet times. Really, how many restaurants do you really need? But the style and pace of a slower season is really pretty good.
