AT&T Cell phone coverage?

by lakegirl, Monday, February 14, 2011, 12:06 (3943 days ago)

Arriving on the 24th of this month (can't wait!!) and wondered if AT&T had good coverage in the Zihua area? I also wondered if anyone had any experience with the AT&T Mexico plan? This is going to be our 2nd visit and we can't wait to get there but this year I need to keep in touch with home as I have a sick family member.

AT&T Cell phone coverage?

I have used my AT&T phone in Zihua for several years. I think with my plan I pay ~$5/mo for international coverage, as it works in Europe as well.

When you turn on your phone in Zihua, you will not connect with AT&T directly, but one of the local companies instead. As I recall, this past year it worked pretty well with the first carrier, but then it switched to a different carrier, and there seemed to be more problems with the service. I also have Skype on my netbook and that is cheaper than cell roaming, but you need to be in a wi-fi zone to use it.

If anyone else has experience with the various phone carriers in Zihua, I would like to know whether it's possible to force one or the other, or if we are stuck with whichever one grabs onto our phone.

We are taking the red-eye out of O'Hare in the morning, and will be on the beach by this time tomorrow!

We have been here since Dec 11 and switched from ATT Friends and Family Plan to Viva Mexico Plan before we left. Took the 2100 minute options for two phones as my needs related to business can unexpectedly demand a lot of minutes. Note: On the Viva Mexico Plan the US and Mexico are treated as "local area" calls, no roaming or long distance, however, only 40 percent of the minutes can originate from Mexico. You can switch back when you get home with no penalty and the time you are on Viva Mexico counts towards your contract period. I believe you do lose rollover minutes when you switch plans.

We use the AT&T International Plan(Mexico). Your text is 50c out going to any one number(my wife a couple of years ago would send the 1 text to everyone and there was a 50c charge for each number- now she has someone to forward all her text). The incoming text are free. I have a Blackberry and when we got our bill for Jan. on the cruise, I had all the EMail charges. We use my phone instead of hers because she has so many people calling her.

We are now in Zihua, and my phone is acting like it did in December.
It connects to Movistar, not Telcel. I can receive calls (was notified of a voice mail) but cannot call back to the US (so was unable to listen to the message). I can make local calls to Zihua numbers.
I don't recall the details of my plan except that years ago I paid $5/mo for international access.
I will be trying to clear this up...

Thanks Northbay!!

Glad you have your toes in the sand!!!

Let me know how you come out would you?? It's very important to me not only make, but receive calls while I'm gone. I don't really care about texts or e-mail.

Thanks Again....

Yesterday I noticed that my phone had connected to Telcel GSM, without my doing anything. And as reported, it works fine with that connection. I was able to phone the US with no problem.

So it seems you would need to find out if there is anything you can do to force Telcel to be your carrier here.

This morning, the Telcel connection is still active. If it goes away again, I will try to find out how to get it back.

For now, all's well!

You can go on line and switch to the Viva Mexico plan (then switch back when you get home). This is different than the International Plan. I used the International plan a couple of years ago while in Europe, still expensive. Also, to get switched you can call a kiosk but preferably an ATT storefront and have them do it for you.

Something odd: I changede some of my stateside numbers to lead with 001+area cade plus 7 digits. Worked fine. But most of my numbers will dial direct without the country code.

ZRob has instructions on how to reach toll free numbers from Mexico. I have used this advice with limited success. My best bet to reach toll free numbers is to have my daughter set her phone to forward to the toll free and I dial her and get forwarded. She only has to do this for a very limited amount of time and then take her phone off call forward.
