Car Rental?

If I rent a car using my Visa signature credit card that has full rental insurance coverage do I need to purchase any other insurance in Mexico? I've been to a couple of car rental web sites and they keep wanting to tack on $155 in insurance for two weeks.

You should check with VISA if the coverage also is valid in Mexico.
As a general information, in Mexico there is no legal obligation to make an insurance contract. So at the end is your decision if you'll run the risk or in its case if the VISA Card covers Mexico.

if you can search the OLD message board you'll get an explanation...something to the effect that yes your visa card will cover your insurance BUT if you are in an accident the police won't recognize your visa coverage...leading to many hassles. I checked a few years ago and visa advised that I get a letter from them specifying the coverage...in the end we just buy the mexican coverage and consider it part of the holiday expense

Your credit card will only cover the rental car. You need to purchase liability insurance (damage to other than your rental car). That is generally $10 -$12 a day. I have never rented in Zihua only Cancun and Cabo. Taxi's are cheap and parking is tough in Zihua.

I just want to share an experience that happened to us in P.Vallarta last year. We rented a car for a week while visiting, and weren't far at all from where we were staying. We were making a left turn and a girl turned left in front of us and we hit. We pulled over and she spoke no English, but we didn't think it would be a big deal becuase her car had literally hundreds of dents and it was so old...a heap, to put it mildly. Well, what a mess it turned out to be. They wound up towing OUR car away. The police were involved (she had a brother on the force) and we had to leave all our belongings in the car -- they allowed us to take nothing with us. The car rental place had to take over and get our belongings back, the police even paid a visit to our hotel room but they were not allowed in by the hotel staff thankfully (we weren't there)! The rental agency went to court for us, but we wound up having to pay a LOT of money for this mess so insurance is REALLY REALLY important. It's just not worth taking any chances. It could have been a scam -- those do happen sometimes, but it's better to be protected. We had been in PV 10 or 12 times without any problems at all, and then the one time...when you lease expect it!

Thanks all! I think you've just convinced me to bite the bullet and buy the insurance. <smile> j
