Remembering Doña Cari

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, México, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 12:08 (28 days ago)

Today marks 5 years since our dear friend and neighbor Doña Cari passed away at the respectable age of 101. She left her mark not only on Zihuatanejo but also on other communities of Guerrero since the days when she taught basic education all up and down the coast of Guerrero, and later when was appointed by the governor, a family member, to help collect money owed to the state surprising everyone with her energy and abilities, and then later when she became the first female regidora in Zihuatanejo and if I recall correctly in all of Mexico. A 4-foot tall dynamo and powerhouse, politicians sought her out for her energetic support. It simply wasn't a campaign rally without Doña Cari. She also appears in bit parts in 2 or 3 of the movies made here in Zihuatanejo including "Las Pirañas Aman en Cuaresma".

Born in Agua de Correa in 1910, she saw a lot of changes happen to Mexico and to our region, and she loved to share her memories of so many rich and varied experiences. Our lives were enriched by knowing her, and it was a privilege to care for her as she needed help in her later years. She will always remain in our hearts.

There will be a mass in her honor this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. All are welcome.
