Not Good For La Ropa

This weekend our unelected municipal representatives who get paid too much to do too little voted 12 to 3 to rescind the mayor's order banning tour buses from La Ropa. With their illogical decision La Ropa just lost any pretension of its luxury status and will now become the main beach of choice for folks who can't afford to use the restaurants or hotels there, which logically means the folks who CAN afford those hotels and restaurants will seek elsewhere to go where they don't have to trip over dirty diapers and beer cans on the beach or listen to bus engines running all day and all night long since the buses also serve as hotels on wheels for their passengers. I guess I don't have to elaborate on how furious and let down I am by our irresponsible authorities.

For over 20 years I have worked hard to attract tourists to La Ropa and the rest of our region who have the high purchasing power we need to sustain our growing local population. But vote-grubbing politicians and wandering vendors have decided that all my work is for nothing and that they prefer to have 30 thousand tourists of low purchasing power instead of a thousand tourists with high purchasing power at Zihuatanejo's only beach with true luxury-class lodgings, because that's what they'll need to come even close to making up for the tourism we continue losing due to the poor choices and omission of duties made by our elected and unelected officials.

Now that the tour buses have the official blessing of the local government we can expect the services for those passengers to increase. More wandering vendors. More cheap food stands with no running water or bathrooms. More unfair competition for the local taxpaying businesses.

We can only hope this matter isn't over and that wiser heads will prevail, but for the moment I am thoroughly disgusted with my local unelected representatives.
