Just another data point...

Note that Mexico does not screen agricultural products for the presence of Aflatoxins and Mycotoxins, except for cereals and grains used as ingredients in preparing commercial products.

Chances are those peanuts sold on the beach (or used to make local peanut butter) have not been tested.

Aflatoxin is particularly nasty, and regularly consuming large amounts of contaminated peanuts puts you at an elevated risk of liver cancer.

Even if you're not allergic to peanuts or peanut products in the States, exposure to peanuts containing large amounts of aflatoxin spores can cause an allergic reaction. Dry roasting reduces the aflatoxin concentration, but only by 20% to 30%.
