If you want to tour the little villages around Patzquaro, I would suggest you get a English speaking guide if you do not speak Spanish. Each of the little towns is known for a trade. The first is wood working, another is items made from palm leaves, another for items made from reeds from the pond. On the other side of Patzquaro is a town know for pottery. On our tour on the way back to Patzquaro we stopped at a restaurant that looked like it was from the Alps. We had the fresh fish that was just caught from the lake- you could pick your fish but we let the chef do the selecting. There is so much history of the villages around the lake and between Morelia. Would you believe Moriali has a small space museum. When we went to Patzquaro, we rented a car for our r/t from Patzquaro. Since our hotel was away from the center of town, only used the car to go eat dinner and hit the ATM each evening after touring because the artisan shops were cash- was about 5 year ago now.
