And the food??

Depends on how good you are at research.. A great deal of the produce and meats goes to the hotels and tourist restaurants n Havana which, in my opinion should be avoided entirely with the exception of coffee or a drink where there's music. If you want some good clues check out a website called Cuba Junky. It lists many "cases particulars" (private homes who rent rooms or entire apartments) as well as restaurants. There are also many government run restaurants which are VERY inexpensive and also good. There are paladares (privately owned restaurants) where the service is poor and state-run places where the service is good. Check out Trip Advisor. Our favorite in Havana for good food was Restaurant Biky - brand new in Havana Centro. If you can't find some good food in Cuba you're not looking hard enough.
