Spider, scorpion, what was it?

Yesterday after dark, something on the hotel handrail stung my wife on the finger. Pain was almost unbearable, but with ice she was able to get to sleep. Took two Benadryl. This morning the pain is gone, but the finger is totally numb. Hand is tingly. Looks like two or three punctures. Any ideas about a likely culprit?

Sounds like a scorpion bite. I lost the feeling in a finger for 3 months when I was 16 and a local scorpion got me.

She should be fine. Some skin might slough off and she might lose the fingernail. Other than that, it'll make a great story for your wide-eyed grandkids. ;)

If you live surrounded by bush (woods) then you need to be vigilant for scorpions. Always shake out shoes, clothing, towels, and bedding. With handrails there's not a lot you can do if you can't see what you're touching.
