Yes, it is so much better when the government runs things. All the honest, hardworking civil servants and politicians built Pemex into an international powerhouse.

Actually, the union of Pemex oil workers did. That's where much of the money went that didn't get reinvested, and López Portillo spent so recklessly it set the nation back decades and we found ourselves unable to refine our own petroleum. Nevertheless, the Odebrecht affair is just the tip of the iceberg that will cause some political heads to roll. Nowadays the huachicoleros are siphoning off much of the nation's petroleum wealth.

Government can run things just fine when proper planning and professionalism are applied and duty to country overrides partisanship. Transparency helps. The various military forces around the world show this is true. The U.S. government put a man on the moon in less than 10 years from JFK's historic speech. The U.S government helped beat back the fascists. Unfortunately now it appears to be trying to undo all the safeguards, checks and balances. Meanwhile Mexico's government kept our economy in good shape while the USA and much of Europe suffered the Great Recession. And it looks like we're going to to get to watch history repeat itself soon.
