Violence & Lawlessness In The Zihuatanejo Area

We have been coming to Zih since 2007. We always stay at Aura Del Mar and got married there in 2008. We’ve always been careful, we don’t stay out late and are aware of our surroundings. We love our Zih vacations. However, last Thanksgiving I was awoken by hundreds of gunshots as someone was killed as part of a hit at the oxxo. A week later my friend and I walked out one side of coconuts, another party walked out the other side where the woman from that party was violently mugged. We have 2 kids, 5 and 7 and travel usually with another family. We have Aura Del Mar booked for thanksgiving 2018 and literally was just looking to book flights when all of these postings of recent violence came up (it seemed quiet for awhile but maybe I’m wrong). I don’t think there is any point comparing to Chicago - to me that’s not a fair comparison based on size, population, and certain areas. We live in Seattle so dangers are not new to us. But when I vacation, I want my biggest worry to be that the kids are quiet enough at the pool while being watched by my husband so they don’t disturb my beach massage. I don’t want to have to worry that we can randomly get mugged or killed, and to me, the chances seem higher and higher lately in Zih. I spent the day trying to find another vacation spot, and of course nothing seems to compare, but I am really torn on whether we should come down again. I suppose I’m looking for someone tell me its safe, without comparisons to cities that are not comparable or by telling me to not wear flashy jewelry - we know all this already. Thanks in advance for any replies as to the day to day for tourists in Zih so I can make an informed decision.
