I live here and have not noticed any significant changes. There is no doubt that there continue to be a concerning level of murders in the area and they cannot be ignored. However, my take is that the violence is occurring among those who are involved in the illicit drug trade. I am out and about in Zihuatanejo on a daily basis and have never personally experienced a feeling of danger. This applies to both the tourist areas of Zihuatanejo and the local neighborhoods where I regularly visit my partner's family. I am not saying that there isn't danger, just that I think that most sensible people who are here to enjoy the natural beauty and lovely people of Zihuatanejo can expect a carefree experience. Sensible things like not wearing expensive jewelry, not flashing a wad of cash, not soliciting illicit drugs, etc. will go a long way towards keeping your stay here as safe as always. From your post I would guess that you are of the sensible type and shouldn't worry about your upcoming trip(s).
