sad but true

I may be at the point where I throw in the towel and look for a new spot for the family vacation. I travel that road often when I am in town, family in tow.

Last year on the way back from Barra, we missed a big shootout by mere minutes on the main drag near Achotes. Marines shooting bad guys, bad guys shooting back, flipped car and road closed for hours. This was in the middle of the day, not 4AM.

I have been championing the area for years as a safe family location. While I feel if you stick to the tourist area, no issues would be expected but that is not the nature of my ideal vacation. I like to get around and explore....somewhere new I am starting to fear.

I'm almost amazed that people seem unaware that it has always been like this here. Especially in the outlying sparsely populated areas. The only thing that has changed is that the USA's stupid proxy "War On Drugs" keeps taking out the capos who are of course always replaced by more violent and ruthless people, because as some wise person once said VIOLENCE BEGETS VIOLENCE. The unwinnable "War On Drugs" long ago was responsible for more deaths than otherwise would have occurred consuming the stupidly banned popular substances in the first place. There is no moral justification to continue this failed policy, but then we all know that the policy is likely to continue especially with The Chump and his racist private prison profiteer Jeff Sessions calling the shots. As much as it bothers some folks to admit it, the violence in Guerrero is directly related to the U.S. consumption of stupidly banned substances and the bad laws that empower violent organized criminals, unscrupulous bankers and corrupt public servants. Legalize the whole spectrum of popular recreational substances and remove the multi-billion dollars a year profits from the violent organized criminals and things will improve greatly.

Rob, I think you confirmed my belief. The replacements seem to be getting more violent and ruthless, and that is a change I think is pretty clear. I would throw indiscriminate in there as well, and that is the part of the equation that is giving me pause.
